Martyrdom of Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam

The decision of arbitration was rejected by the rebels (Kharijites), On this julle point, both the parties, i.e. Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam and Tulaqa Muavia with his supporters, were considered to be unbelievers. First, they gathered the army so that the people, who were thinking in the opposite way, should be assassinated. But, when all the residents of Nehravan were killed, and their camps in Rāmhormoz were destroyed, the rest of the people thought to proceed according to their own way. Among them, three rebels(Kharijites) viz. Abdur Rehman bin Muljim, Burk bin Abdullah and Amr bin Bakr consulted each other and decided that there were three big powers against their line of thinking, i. e. Ali bin Ta’alib AlahisSalam, Mu’awiyah bin Abi Sufyan and Amr bin A’as. Their existence should be wiped out.

Abdur Rehman bin Muljim was a sworn enemy of Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam. His fate was to be the most unfortunate of this community. He took up the challenge to kill Hazrat Ali Murtuza AlahisSalam. Burk ibn-e-Abdullah came forward to kill Amir-e-Mu’awiyah, and Amr ibn Bakr promised to assassinate Amr ibn-e-A’as. All three of them fixed same day, i.e. 17th Ramadan Hijri 40 for the execution of their plan. Amir-e-Mu’awiyah and Amr ibn-e-A’as were survived, but Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam life was sacrificed.

Ibn-e-Muljim was a very unfortunate man. As Hadith states, Rasul-eKhuda ﷺ told Hazrat Ali , “He was the most wretched man in the people of a previous time.”

Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam requested, “Ya Rasulallah ﷺ! He was the most wretched man who killed the she-camel of Allah, the Almighty.” Huzur ﷺ said, “You are right. Now, let me know who is the most wretched man in the people of the previous time?” Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam politely said, “Ya Rasulallah ﷺ, I have no idea about it.” Huzur ﷺ said, “The man who strikes the sword on your head is the most wretched man. Ibn-e-Muljim is the one who struck sword on you, hence right from that time till the day of judgement; he is proved to be a suspect.”

This, Accursed (one who is hated by Allah) man came to Kufa to fulfil his unholy intention. On the way, he fell in love with a beautiful, young lady named Qitam. He proposed her. Her family members were killed in the battles at Nehravan. She had a great hatred for Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam before she was boycotted. Now, fuel was added to the fire. She replied Ibn-e-Muljim,

“If, as a Meher (an amount to be given to the bride in exchange of Nikah) you kill Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam, I can marry you.” Ibn-e-Muljim said that that was only the purpose of his travel. This very much encouraged his unholy intention. a Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam could probably foresee that the time of his martyrdom wall approaching. He increased the worship and contemplation of Almighty He passed his nights and days in prayer and bescech. He passed the holy night of 17th Ramadan-ul-Mubarak in the great attachment and deep love of the holy vision of Allah. This is a great sacred night. During this night the Holy Quran was revealed at the cave of Hira. In this way, during the Holy Quran’s revelation, this night (Shab-i-Qadr) was, and is, considered to be a night of a great significance.

On the way, he kept on alerting the people for the prayen On entering the mosque, he awoke Ibn-e-Muljim who had stayed there overnight for the fulfilment of his purpose. Imam Ibn-i-Jarir Tibra describes, “When Hazrat Ali Murtuza AlahisSalam to put his head in the prostration (Sajda) posture, Ibn-e-Muljim hit a very forceful stroke on his holy neck The stroke was so deep and fatal that there were least hopes of his survival. The people in prayer felt as if a great disaster grabbed them. Ibn e-Muljim tried to escape but was captured. Juad Ibn-i-Habira Radiallahu anhoo led the prayer. After the prayer, Ibn-e-Muljim was brought before Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam, According to the narrations given by Tabkat-i-Ibn-i-Sa’ad, “Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam asked him certain questions and then ordered his people to keep Ibn-eMuljim comfortable and safe.”

Writer Ibn-i-Abi Shaiba says Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam said, “If I survive, we will do what is proper. And if I am dead, assassinate him according to the law of revenge (Qisas), i.e. eye for an eye, as it has been commanded by the Holy Quran. Do not compromise on this point. (Jamaul Favaid Vol-2)

Before the assassination of Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam, Ibn-e-Muljim had kept the swora deep in the poison for many days. So Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam conditions went on deteriorating by and by.
