Hajj-tul-Wida and the Hajj (Pilgrimage) of Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam

On Saturday, the 26th of Zilqada Hijri 10, Huzur ﷺ left from Medina for Hajj after performing Namaz-e-Zuhar. He wore the Hajj Ehram at Zul Huleifa, which is 6 miles away from Medina and he recited the Talbia (Labbayka Allāhumma Labbayk)-name of prayer. His programme of departure for Hajj had already been publicly declared. Especially from Medina, a number of people joined him for Hajj. He was surrounded by people on all the four sides at the Zul Huleifa camp. His call of Labbaek was responded by the same word from the people in such a way that the forest, the sky and the whole atmosphere was full of its echo. People on the way to Mecca were constantly reciting Labbayk, Labbayk. At the place of Arafat, one lac of pilgrims (Hajis) was gathered.

Huzur ﷺ entered Holy Mecca in the morning of Sunday, the 4ch of Zilhajj. The whole journey was completed in nine days. First of all, they performed a Tawa’af of Ka’aba. After that, they fulfilled other Arkans (ceremonies) of Safa and Marwa. But they did not untie the Ehram after the performance of Umrah. Not only that, they untie it only after completing all the requirements of Hajj. This type of Hajj is known as Hajj-e-Quran, and it is performed with the same Ehram and the intention (Niyat) of both, Umrah as well as Hajj. First, Umrah is performed, and then, the requirements of Hajj are fulfilled. After performing both these processes, the Ehram is untied.

Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam, who was on the post of Qazi at Yemen, arrived at Mecca-eMuazzama from Yemen, with the caravan of Hajjis for Haj brought a camel for Huzurki to perform Qurbani (sacrificing the animal) Huzurist asked him, “Which words did you recite while tying Ehram ?”

Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam replied, “I said, ‘O Allah, I am tying the Ehram in the same way as Huzurss has tied. He has tied Ehram-e-Quran, which once tied, cannot be untied till even after the Tawa’af-e-Baitullah and Sahih of Safa-Marwa, but can be opened only after performing all the requirements of Hajj.’ Then, he told Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam, “Do not untie the Ehram now.” He sacrificed a hundred camels on the 10th of Zil Hajj, out of which 63
were sacrificed by his own Holy hands, and then Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam was made to sacrifice the remaining 37 camels. This description is given in Sahih Muslim Vol-I.

Translation: 63 camels were sacrificed by Rasul-e-Khuda ﷺ own holy hands, and then Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam was made to sacrifice the remaining 37 camels. In this way, Huzur ﷺ joined Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam in the process of Qurbani. Then he ordered to cook one piece of this meat. They cooked it, and both of them ate it.

Note: Huzur ﷺdelivered a Khutba (lecture) at Arafaat wherein he advocated various important guidances. Due to this fact, this lecture is more significant than all his other lectures.

Besides Islam, though there are so many other religions brought through messengers, in whom the commandments that were given by Allah are almost lost, and there are two reasons for this position:

i. The followers stopped the practices of the Divine Books, not only which; the books were abused by new additions and omissions.

ii. In those communities, there was none at that time who could reflect the religion rightly in his speech and behaviour, nor there anyone who could preach The Truth in its proper light.

No religion can survive in its real nature if, the Divine Message is neglected, and if there is no true spiritual person who would guide in the path of religion. The religion can live only if there are persons practising a religion with their deeds and thoughts. The persons who live a life based on real truth and founded on the basis of religious norms can only help the religion to survive. Islam is such a religion that would survive untill the day of judgement, and there cannot be any other Nabi after Huzur ﷺ, hence for its protection, it was necessary that:

i. Each and every letter of the Quran is preserved, and each one of my descendents is associated with it.

ü. In all the times, the persons, who are living a life of truth and are selected by Allah, are sheltered by the society, and their way of life is imitated by all other persons. Huzur ﷺ clearly stated, “This is the true and pious value of life, and you be associated with it so that you will not be misled.”

As the Muslims from all the regions were present in Arafat at the time of Hajj-tul-Wida, Huzur ﷺ preached the basic two principles of Islam and insisted that everyone should always remain informed of these two principles. Then stating the principles he said, “Everyone should have firm faith in the commandments of Holy Quran, and the pious path of life that has been shown by me is followed in the right spirit, Islam will never scatter. “Hazrat Jabir says, in Tirmizi Vol-II;

Translation:At Hajj-tul-Vida, on the day of Arafat, I have seen Huzur ﷺ preaching while riding on Qiswa, and I have also heard him saying from his Holy tongue,

“O people, I am leaving two things for you; if you hold them tightly you would never be misguided. These two things are the HolyBook and my descendents i.e. Hazrat Fatema AlahisSalam and Hasnain Karimain AlaihisSalam
Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam

There is a clear indication of this in one of the Hadiths which is being bestowed now.

Hazrat Fatema AlahisSalam, Hasnain Karimain AlaihisSalam and Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam are the direct descendents of Huzur ﷺ. The Hadith now is going to follow also, indicates this point.
