Adventures of Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam in the Ghazwa (battle of) – e-Khandaq

This battle was fought during Shawal of Hijri 05. It was during this war that Quresh, Yahud (Jews) and Qabail – e – Arab collected an army of ten thousand soldiers and attacked Medina. The commandant in chief was Abu Sufiyan. Arbastan never before this saw an attack with such a big army.
When they came to know that the enemy was leaving for the war, on the suggestion of Hazrat Salman Farsi Radiallahu anhoo, to prevent the rivals from entering into the city, Huzur ordered to dig a three and a half miles long trench. It was dug within twenty days by three thousand Sahabas. The maximum labour was contributed by the holy hands of Shahenshah-e-Do Aalam Nabi Pak ﷺ While the Sahaabas were digging the trench, the whole mountain of Sula was giving the echo of this song.

By Allah, had Allah (our protector) not been there, we would neither have acquired guidance nor could have given Zakat nor offered Namaz. Oh, Allah! Bestow over us the inner peace so that we can be firm in our actions. These people have tortured us beyond limits. They wished to take us away from the religion by giving us all types of troubles and tortures, but we kicked away their thoughts and offers.

This was the situation here. Whereas, the Quresh, Yahud and Qabail-eArab’s army of ten thousand, coming from both, up and downsides, surrounded the trench in such a way that the timid-hearted persons were taken aback. And the hypocrites (munafiq) in the Islamic army set for homes under one excuse or the other. But the zeal of the Sahaba-e-Karam increased wonderfully because of their firm faith, and their confidence became stronger. The Holy Quran describes it as under:

Translation: And as soon as the believers saw the (allied) parties, they said, “This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us, and Allah and His Messenger have spoken sincerely.” And in no way did it increase them except in belief and submission. (Surah Ahzab 22)

This encirclement went on for twenty two days. The Muslims were starving continuously. They had to keep awake during nights. Ten thousand unbelievers were constantly throwing stones and arrows. It was the distressing time for the Momins. No other battle created such a miserable and disastrous situation.

The brave warriors of the unbelievers, viz. Umru-bin-Vad, Zarar, Hubeira and Naufil decided to cross the trench and attack the Muslims with swords. Incidentally, at one place the width of the ditch was little less; they made the horses jump and came inside. Among them, Umru-bin-Vad was the bravest. He was considered to be equal to one thousand horse riders. He was the first to proceed ahead and shouted, “Who can provide me with a proper match?” Sher-e-Khuda AlahisSalam said, “It is me. ” Huzurﷺ prevented him and said that it was Umru-bin-Vad. But none dared to rise. Umru-bin-Vad repeated once more. Then, it was only Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam who rose up and came forward. Huzur Sallallahu alaihi wasallam prevented him again. On the third call, he, himself rose up and upon Huzur’s ﷺwords, “It is Umru-binVad”, he said, “Yes, Huzur he is Umru-bin-Vad. But he has challenged us thrice.” Then he gifted them his sword and permitted to face the rivals. He tied a turban on his head with his Holy hands. This was a particular type of honour. It was Umru’s promise that if anyone kept three proposals before him, one of them would be accepted by him. When Hazrat Ali AlahisSalam was convinced of its truthfulness, he said, “The first thing is, accept Islam.” He said, “That is not possible.” Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam said, “Retreat from the battle-field.” He said, “I cannot tolerate the women’s taunt.” Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam said, “Then, gives me a fight.” Umru laughed and said, “I never expected that under the sky, anyone would give me a challenge.” Then he asked, “My son, whose son are you?” Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam replied, “I am the son of Hazrat Abu Talib.” He said, “I had relations with Hazrat Abu Talib. I do not wish to fight with his son.” Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam said, “I am a warrior on behalf of Islam.

Umru was very angry. He struck the sword so forcefully that it cut the shield and hit on the forehead of Sher-e-Khuda AlahisSalam. Now, the tiger of Allah hit the sword so furiously that Umru was screaming in blood and dust. Simultaneously, he shouted a slogan, “Allah o Akbar.” There were shouts that Umru had died. Zarar, Hubeira and Naufil also were there. All three of them attacked Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam. But when there was a Hyderi rebound, they all ran away from there. Naufil fell down in the trench. Sher-e Khuda AlahisSalam went into the trench and sent him to the other world. History has always testified that the help of Allah is always awaiting the person who sacrifices his own self. After the extra-ordinary exemplified courage and unique sacrifice of Sher-e-Khuda AlahisSalam, the door of Allah’s divine help was opened. By the Divine Order, there was a severe storm which greatly affected the rival’s army. It was night, and the lamps were extinguished. Their tents were uprooted. The vessels were turned out of the ovens. Most of the food-stuff was undone by the storm. It was winter. There was no way out to protect from the fierce cold. The non-Muslims lost their confidence. Their commandant in chief, Abu Sufiyan told the wise people of the army that much food-storage had been destroyed. How should they be able to manage food for ten thousand people? He said, “This storm, the cruel season of winter. Now the best way is to shift from here.” After saying this, he escaped with the Quresh Army. The generals also had done the same thing. The whole battle-field of Khandaq (trench) was evacuated by the non-Muslims. Now it was pure. After twenty two days the people of Medina heaved a sigh of relief. What a great blessings of Allah it is that the army of ten thousand soldiers escaped on their toe. Translation: O you, who had believed, remember the favour of Allah upon you when armies came to [attack] you and We sent upon them a
wind and armies (of angels) you did not see. And ever is Allah, of what you do, seeing. (Surah Ahzab 9)
