Definition of the word Imam

Appendix of Chapter – I

Imam: Definition of the word Imam: The word Imam means: guide/leader. According to the dictionary, Imam is such a person whose instructions should be followed, and the behaviour should be imitated.

The mission of Imam should be to lead the people towards the Destination of Spiritualism (Manzil-e-Maqsud). Even, the things, other than human beings, also are considered to be the leaders who help in entering into the vestibule of paradise. It is because of this that the Holy Quran describes the open path and the Book of Allah to be the Imam. The community of Hazrat Shoaib and the community of Hazrat Lut were on such open path. Holy Quran describes this path as Imam.

Translation: And surely the two of them were indeed on an evident record (or: register, literally: Imam). (Surah-Al Hijr, Verse -79)

Holy Taurat was the way and law of Allah for Bani Israel, which led him on the true path. It is for this that Holy Quran Majid describes it as the Imam of Bani Israel.

Translation: And even before him is the Book of Musa (Moses) for a leader (i.e., literally: Iman =guide) and mercy. (Surah-e-Hud, Verse -17 and Surah-e-Ihqaf, Verse-12)

Leading through Holy Preaching and Guidance for True Thinking

The person whose advice is obeyed and way of life followed is known as Imam in Arabic. From the point of view of the followers, there are two types of leaders (Imam). One type of Imam is taken to be worth following by the pious people. Such Imams are the path showers. The others are those whom the men of thinking and arguments have accepted as their leaders. Such leaders are the agnostics. Holy Quran gives a description of both the types of Imams. The mentions of Imams of Path are seen in some verses. The verse referring to Bani Israel has been given below:

Translation: “And We made from among them leaders (Imam) guiding by Our command when they were patient and [when] they were certain of Our signs.” (Surah Al Sajda, Verse -24)

Imam Zalalat (misguider)’s description is in the Holy Quran with a remark that this is atheism. And, those who believe in this deserve hell. Its detailed description has been given below:

i. Surah-e-Bara’at has been received regarding unbelievers of the Meccans wherein, the Holy Quran describes as the unbelievers and atheists. It says:

Translation: “And if they break their oaths after their treaty and defame your religion, then fight the leaders of disbelief, for indeed, there are no oaths [sacred] to them;[fight them that] they might cease.”

(Surah-e-Tauba Verse-12)

The persons who mislead the community by their prayers and wrong practices of the caliphate are described by Hadiths as destructors of the society. According to Imam Abu Daud and Tirmizi’s interpretations, these people are very dangerous people for society. Hadith quotes that Rasul-eKhuda said,

Translation: ‘In connection with my (ummat) community, I am very much afraid of the Imams who mislead society.’

ii. Pharaoh (Firaun) and his army were establishing their authority and power in the region and, were torturing people anarchically. People also were following them blindly and were falling in the ditches. Holy Quran has declared these leaders of religions who deserve nothing less than hell. It has been stated in (Surah-eQasas Verse 39-42 )that:

Translation: And he (Pharaoh) was arrogant, he and his soldiers, in the land, without right, and they thought that they would not be returned to Us. So We took him and his soldiers and threw them into the sea. So see how was the end of the wrong doers. And We made them leaders inviting to the Fire, and on the Day of Resurrection, they will not be helped. And We caused to overtake them in this world a curse, and on the Day of Resurrection, they will be of the despised.

Do not be under any illusion that only Firaun, along with his supporters and relatives, will be punished like this. The people similar to Firaun, may they will be caliphs and sultans, also will not be spared. Holy Quran forbids these people in many places. It has been mentioned in the Surah-e-Momin, Verses 52 Para 24, that:

Translation: On the day, their excuse will not benefit the wrongdoers, and they will have the curse, and they will have the worst home.

The tortures and harassment by these so-called religious leaders and the self-made rulers is a deviation from the path shown by Allah, the Almighty and His messenger. Through this method, they became religious leaders and earned the worth of contempt and scorn. While delivering his public sermon from the dias, Amir-ul-Mo’aminin Saiyedna Abu Bakr Siddiq said,

Translation: The person who obeys the rules and regulations of Hazrat Muhammad’s community but, does not follow the holy book, is the hated one. (Kanzul A’amaal Vol. 5) اشت

When the society is captured by a tyrant and his tortures are executed on the people, it is the duty of the people that he or they should be warned and they should be advised and forced to follow the right path. If they avoid the advice and do not come round, then, according to Hadith, they are the hated ones. Once, while describing the concept of hatred, Hazrat Rasul-eKhuda told Bani Israel:

Translation: “Listen, always advise for the good behaviour and prevent from bad deeds. Lead the anti-religious and anti-social people towards the right path. Let them not disobey the Islamic commandments, lest, Allah, the Almighty will punish you for not doing your duty. If you do not perform your duty, you also will be punished as Bani Israel had received punishment.” (Miskat)

To raise head against the cruelty, tyranny and wrong is one of the strongest rebels. Hence, one who is martyred in this way is crowned as a leader of the lords (Saiyed-ul-Shohda). Hazrat Jabir states that Nabi said:

Translation: “Hazrat Hamza-bin-Abdul Muttalib is a leader of the lords (Saiyed-ul-Shohda). The person who raises his head against the injustice and tyranny of the ruler also is a leader of the lords. When the cruel ruler was ordered to stop the tyranny and misbehaviour, the real leader (Imam) was killed. “

On the basis of Tirmizi, Hakim Jami-ul-Sagir 2, it has been stated in Al Targib Manzari Vol. 3 that, the history of Islam is witness of the fact that the manner in which Saiyedana Imam Husain had raised his head against the injustice, cruelty and tyranny of the ruler, is a glaring and unique example of martyrdom in the history of human society. This chapter describes the sacrifices of the servants of Allah whose martyrdom was at such a height that till today, the real lovers of Allah and people of the real path try to follow them inch by inch.

The height of prestige, fight for truth and importance of patience that has been established by him is worth-practising for the whole of the community. What a great truth has been expressed by Hazrat Zuber’s son Hazrat Musaib at the very time while fighting with Abdul Malik-binMarwan’s army, and his army became treacherous. He fearlessly remembering the importance of Saiyedna Husain’s fight for the truth, said;

Translation: “The people, who became martyrs in the battle of Karbala, faced the situation with great courage and firm confidence. They carved out and established a path of truth for the religious and pious people.”

Imam’s that bravery established such a great example of ideals of war and firmness of will that though the army withdrew, he did not submit against a tyrant like Abdul Malik Marwan and, sacrificed his own life for the cause of truth. In addition to his Brother Hazrat Abdullah-bin-Zuber’s example of bravery, there were so many similar examples of bravery and self-confidence. On the basis of this support, he faced Hujjaj’s arrogant and end army with great courage and confidence. His zest was so much that, en when his own army betrayed him, he fought with the rivals with the me force and power. In this way, he enlivened his noble principles and als. Not few but lacs of people have accepted Saiyedna Imam Husain’s noble and divine principles in life and have been following his ay of life till today, nay, will follow till the Day of Judgement. Inspired his bravery and self-confidence, many people fought against the and atheists. Either they crushed the untruth or by sacrificing eir lives, became eternal and immortal. All such people are the best mong their folk and, by following Saiyedna Imam Husain and accepting as their pious leader, have acquired the throne of martyrdom.
