Writing Alaih Salam with Ahlul Bayt

Why we should say
‘Alaihi Salaam’ for Ahlulbayt (as)

Sunni Imams allowed using ‘Alaihi Salaam’ for Ahlulbayt (as)

Muhaddith Shah Abdul Aziz Dehlavi? When this question was posed to him he replied as follows:

“The term ‘Alaihi Salaam’ can also be referred to for non-prophets, and evidence of this can be ascertained from the fact that in the books of hadith the term ‘Alaihi Salaam’ can be found next to the names of Hadhrath ‘Ali, Hasan, Husayn, Fatima, Khadija, Abbas. Some Ulema have opposed this, in opposition to the Shi’a, but this terminology is not prohibited under the Shari’a
Fatal Azeezi page 235

Similarly Allamah Alusi wrote:

“Sending blessings on other than the prophets & angels on this matter the views of the Ulema are different. In the view of Qazi Ayadh and most of the Ulema, it is permissible. They have sought to prove this in reliance of this verse:
‘Allah and his Angels send blessings on Rasulullah (s), Salute him with the best salutation”‘

and also the sahih hadith:
1. the Prophet said, “O Allah! Send your blessings upon the offspring of Abu Aufa.”

2. Rasulullah (s) opened his hands and stated:
‘O Allah send your blessing & mercies upon the family Sa’d ibn Ubadah

3. ibn Haban corrected a tradition that a woman approached Rasulullah and requested ‘O Allah send blessings on me and my husband’ and Rasulullah (s) sent blessings in this manner.

4. according to Muslim’s report the Angels recite for every momin ‘Sala Allah alayka wa ala jasdhaak'”
Tafseer Ruh al-Ma’ani, Volume 22 page 85

We read in Sahih Sharh al-Aqida al-Tahawyia by Shaykh Hassan al-Saqqaf, page 223:

لفظة (عليها السلام) بعد ذكر السيدة فاطمة ولفظة (عليه السلام) بعد ذكر سيدنا علي أو سيدنا الحسن أو سيدنا الحسين رضي الله عنهم وأرضاهم من خصوصياتهم وخصوصيات آل البيت أي من المستحبات

The term (Alaiha Salaam) after mentioning the name of lady Fatima, and the term (Alaihi Salaam) after mentioning the name of Ali, or Hassan or Hussain may Allah be pleased with them, is one of the exclusives for Ahlulbayt, which means that its mustahab.

Reply Two – Sunni Imams themselves used ‘Alaihi Salaam’ for Ahlulbayt (as)

Some tried to persuade their adherents not to use ‘Alaihi Salaam’ for the members of Ahlulbayt (as) in an attempt to bring the merits of Ahlulbayt (as) closer to common companions but the fact is that the early Sunni Imams had themselves used ‘Alaihi Salaam’ for the members of Ahlulbayt (as) distinguishing them from other companions and its biggest proof comes from none other than Imam Bukhari who has used ‘Alaihi Salaam’ for Ali bin Abi Talib (as):

حدثنا يحيى حدثنا وكيع عن الأعمش عن سعد بن عبيدة عن أبي عبد الرحمن عن علي عليه السلام قال۔۔۔

Sahih Bukhari, book on the commentary of Quran, Hadith 4566

Imam Bukhari also used ‘Alaiha Salaam’ for Fatima Zahra (as):
لما ثقل النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم جعل يتغشاه فقالت فاطمة عليها السلام

Sahih Bukhari, Kitab al-Maghazni, Hadith 4103

Imam Bukhari also used ‘Alaihi Salaam’ for Imam Hussain (as):
أتي عبيد الله بن زياد برأس الحسين عليه السلام فجعل في طست

Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 3465

Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal used ‘Alaiha Salaam’ for Fatima Zahra (as):
۔۔۔ حتى دخلنا على فاطمة عليها السلام فقال لها كيف ۔۔۔

Musnad Ahmed bin Hanbal, Tradition 19420

Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal used ‘Alaihi Salaam’ for Ali bin Abi Talib (as):

۔۔۔ قرأت بسورتين قرأ بهما علي عليه السلام قال قرأ بهما ۔۔۔

Musnad Ahmed bin Hanbal, Tradition 9182

One of the beloved scholars of Salafies namely Imam Shawkani also used ‘Alaihi Salaam’ and ‘Alaiha Salaam’ for Ali bin Abi Talib (as) and Fatima Zahra (as) respectively at various places Nail al-Awtar, such as Volume 2 page 90:

إن في لبس الثوب الأحمر سبعة مذاهب : الأول الجواز مطلقا جاء عن علي عليه السلام وطلحة وعبد الله بن جعفر والبراء وغير واحد من الصحابة

There are seven opinions about wearing red cloth: The first (opinion)is that it is absolute lawful and this is the opinion of Ali ‘Alaihi Salaam’ , Talha, Abdullah bin Jaffar, al-Bara and other companions.

We also read in Nail al-Awtar, Volume 2 page 162:
وسيأتي حديث فاطمة عليها السلام

“The statement of Fatima ‘Alaiha Salaam’ is on the next (page)”

Imam Muhammad Zahid al-Kawthari al-Hanafi (d. 1371 H) in his famed work al-Hawi fi Sirat al-Tahawi, page 27 used ‘Alaihi Salaam’ for Ali bin Abi Talib (as):

وتبدو على كلامه آثار بغضه لعلي عليه السلام في كل خطوة من خطوات تحدثه

“The signs of hatred against Ali ‘Alaiha Salaam’ appears in his (Ibn Tamiyah’s) words in every line of his statement”.

Late Salafi/Ahle Hadith scholar Maulana Waheed uz Zaman also used ‘Imam’ and ‘Ahle Salam’ for both Hasan and Hussain (as) in his Urdu translation of Sahih Bukhari:
Sahih Bukhari, volume 2 page 315 (Maktaba Rehmania Lahore)

And last but certainly not the least, the Imam of Salafies Nasiruddin Albaani also used ‘Alaiha Salaam’ [peace be upon her] for Fatima Zahra in his book Adaab al-Zafaf, page 217:
شكوى ابنته فاطمة عليها السلام

“The complain of his daughter Fatima peace be upon her….”

Reply Three – A Salafi scholar used ‘Alaihi Salaam’ for his Imam

While recording the biography of one of the most famous Salafi Imams namely Ibn Qayim al-Jawzi, a Salafi scholar Muhammad Ali Qutub stated in his book Aemat al-Fiqh al-Islami, Volume 11 page 15:
سلام على الإمام … الإمام شمس الدين محمد أبي عبدالله بن أبي بكر قيم الجوزية بن أيوب بن سعد الزرعي الدمشقي سلام عليه في الأولين والآخرين

“Peace be upon the Imam …the Imam Shamsuddin Muhammad Abi Abdullah bin Abi Bakr Qayim al-Jawzia bin Ayub bin Saad al-Zar’ai al-Demashqi, peace be upon him in the first and the last”

Saying “Radhi Allaho Anho” after the names of Sahaba is a bida !!

It is a common custom among Muslims to recite “Radhi Allaho Ta-allah Anho” after the names of Righteous Companions of Rasool Allah [saww].

But Rasool Allah [saww] never ordered that the later generations of Muslims to say “Radhi Allaho Anho” whenever the names of Sahaba were mentioned. Neither did the Sahaba used the term “Radhi Allaho Anho” after the names of each other nor did the Taba’een used to do this after the names of Sahaba. This was not the case with Daroof (Salwaath), in which they would always showers blessing and peace upon Rasool Allah [saww] and his progeny whenever the name of Rasool Allah [saww] was mentioned.

It was later Muslim generations, who introduced this custom for the first time, they did so according to their own OPINION, which is why they felt that it did not constitute a violation to any “Established Law of Islam” and found it in complete harmony with it’s principles (even if it didn’t exist in the time of Rasool Allah [saww]).

And the Reward for this Muslim Generation, in the words of Rasool Allah [saww]:

“He who introduced some good practice in Islam which was followed after him (by people) he would be assured of reward like one who followed it, without their rewards being diminished in any respect.”
Sahih Muslim, Book 034, Number 6466

Salafi double standards

If Salafies still believe that their definition is correct, then they must declare whole of the Muslim Ummah to be “Mubt’adi”(Innovator), indulged in “Dhalalah”(Misguided), who are the fuel of Hell fire, because the whole Ummah says “Radhi Allaho Anho” after the names of Sahaba (including Salafies themselves too).

But here Salafies come up with their Double Standards. Instead of condemning this act (as they should do according to their self-invented definition of bidah), they deem it to be a highly virtuous act.

Saudi Tafseer e Quran:
Saudi Government distributed millions of Qur’an in Pakistan with Urdu Translation and Tafseer (printed by Shah Fahad printing Complex in Madina). In the commentary of the last verse of Surah Al-Mujaddla:

“… it is a custom (i.e. not from Qur’an or Sunnah) to use “Radhi Allah Anham” for Sahaba and “Alaihim Salat o Salam” for the Prophets. It is the same like “Rehmat ullah alahi” can be literally used for both Alive and the dead…”

Not only have the Salafies embraced this newly introduced custom (contrary to their belief that every new thing is a Dhalalah), they have made another innovation by introducing another Law in the Sharia of Islam.

Saudi Tafseer e Quran:
In the commentary of same verse, this Saudi paid Alim further continues to write:

“…According to the Ulama, except for the linguistic meaning, it is prohibited to use this (i.e. Phrase like Radhi Allaho Anho) for anyone except for Sahaba Karam…”

Do you know what this Salafi Alim wants to say when he wrote, “except for the linguistic meaning….”?. Let us give you an example. Linguistically, Salat means Prayer. But Shar’i meaning of Salat is praying in a manner that Rasool Allah [saww] told us. Linguistically, “Saum” means holding on. But Shar’i meaning is not eating from sunrise till sun set.

The Salafi Alim has innovated a new Law in Shar’ia, by prohibiting something that has not been prohibited by Allah [swt] i.e. to prohibit the use “Radhi Allaho Anho” for anyone except the righteous companions of Rasool Allah [saww].

This constitutes a major innovation of misguidance i.e. to prohibit any thing, that has not been prohibited by Allah (swt) and his beloved Rasool [saww]. Let us further quote from the same article by above-mentioned authentic Salafi site i.e:
Islam-QA.com

Islam QA states:

“Bid’ah may be divided into two categories:

(i) Bid’ah, which constitutes kufr
(ii) Bid’ah, which does not constitute kufr

If you ask, what is the definition of bid’ah, which constitutes kufr and that which does not constitute kufr?

The answer is:

Shaykh Haafiz al-Hukami (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “The kind of bid’ah which constitutes kufr is when one denies a matter on which there is scholarly consensus, which widely-known, and which no Muslim can have any excuse for not knowing, such as denying something that is obligatory, making something obligatory that is not obligatory, or making something haraam halaal, or making something halaal haraam; (Ma’aarij al-Qubool, 2/503-504)”

If “making something obligatory that is not obligatory” is a bidah or Kufr, then how can the Salafi Mufassir claims that it is not permissible to use “Radhi Allaho Ta-allah Anho” for anyone save the Sahaba?

Note:
Salafies have 2 lame excuses for the innovation of saying “Radhi Allaho Anho” after the names of Sahaba:

Defence 1:
It’s only a Dua for the Sahaba and we can do it any time (even after mentioning the name of Sahaba).

Reply:
If it is allowed to innovate new timings for doing Dua (e.g. after mentioning the names of Sahaba), then why do the

Salafi claim that sending Salat (Darood) on Rasool Allah (saww) before Adhan is Bidah?

Salat (Darood) is an Arabic word, which itself means Dua.

Double standards!

Defence 2:
Allah (swt) said that he was pleased with Sahaba at Bait-e-Ridhwan.

Salafies claim that it’s allowed to say “Radhi Allaho Anho” after the names of Sahaba while Allah (swt) revealed a verse at the occasion of Bait-e-Ridhwan, that He (swt) is well pleased with Sahaba under the tree.

Allah was well pleased with the believers when they swore allegiance unto thee beneath the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, and He sent down peace of reassurance on them, and hath rewarded them with a near victory;
Al-Qur’an Surah 48, Ayah 18 (Translation by Pickthal)

Reply:
In the above verse, Allah (swt) only told that He (swt) was pleased with Sahaba, who swore allegiance under the tree. But nowhere Allah (swt) ordered in above verse that the later coming Muslim Generations have to always says “Radhi Allaho Anho” whenever the names of Sahaba are mentioned.

Rasool Allah (saww) also recited these Qur’anic verses, but he never came to this conclusion that Allah (swt) ‘s objective behind this verse was for coming Muslim generations to recite “Radhi Allaho Anho” after the names of Sahaba. Even Sahaba who read the Qur’an never arrived at this conclusion.

It is indeed a mystery and to HOW Salafies have reached this conclusion. In our humble opinion, Salafies must acknowledge that it’s a lame excuse and that saying “Radhi Allaho Anho” is an innovation by the later generation Muslims.

Secondly, if the presence of verse of Bait-e-Ridhwan is enough to say “Radhi Allaho Anho” whenever the names of Sahaba are mentioned, then why do the Salafies neglect the presence of the verse of sending Salat upon Rasool Allah (saww) in the Qur’an? Allah (swt) asked us to send Salat upon Rasool Allah (saww).

Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet: O ye that believe! Send ye blessings on him, and salute him with all respect.
Al-Qur’an Surah 33, Ayah 56 (Translation by Yusuf Ali)

When this is the case, why is it Bidah to send Salat upon Rasool Allah (saww) before Adhan?

Double Standards!

Imam Bukhari in his Sahih Bukhari mentions the chain of ahadith many times as

Fatima A.S

Imam al-Bukhari also used ‘Alaiha Salaam’ for Fatima (A.S):

لما ثقل النبي ‏ ‏صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ ‏جعل يتغشاه فقالت ‏ ‏فاطمة ‏ ‏عليها السلام

In the above chain it says: ‏ ‏ ‏ ‏فاطمة ‏ ‏عليها السلامi.e from Fatima “ALAIHA SALAM”

At another place Imam Bukhari in his Sahih Bukhari mention Fatima “ALAIHA SALAM”

VII: Jibril used to review the Qur’an with the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace

Translation: It is reported from ‘A’isha that Fatima, peace be upon her, said, “The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, confided to me, ‘Jibril used to review the Qur’an with me every year, but this year he reviewed it with me twice. I only think that my time is approaching.'”

4711. Ibn ‘Abbas said, “The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was the most generous of people, and he was at his most generous during the month of Ramadan because Jibril used to met him every night in the month of Ramadan until it ended. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to review the Qur’an with him. When Jibril met him, he was more generous with good than the blowing wind.”

XIX: A woman removing something harmful from a person praying

498. It is related that ‘Abdullah said, “Once while the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was standing in prayer at the Ka’ba, there was a group of Quraysh sitting there and one of them said, ‘Do you not see this show-off? Which of you will go to so and so’s butchered camel, get hold of its innards, bring them and then, when he prostrates, put them on his back?’ The most wretched of them did it and when the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, prostrated, he put them on his back. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, remained in prostration and they laughed until they fell over one another laughing. Someone went to Fatima, peace be upon her, who was a young girl at the time. She came running. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, remained in prostration until she removed it from him. Then she turned to them and cursed them. When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, finished the prayer, he said, ‘O Allah! Punish Quraysh! O Allah, punish Quraysh! O Allah, punish Quraysh!’ Then he named them: ‘O Allah, punish ‘Amr ibn Hisham, ‘Utba ibn Rabi’a, Shayba ibn Rabi’a, al-Walid ibn ‘Utba, Umayya ibn Khalaf, ‘Uqba ibn Abi Mu’ayt, and ‘Umara ibn al-Walid.'”

‘Abdullah said, “By Allah, I saw them all lying dead on the day of Badr and then they were dragged into the well of Badr and then the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘The people of the well have been pursued by the curse.'”

2754. It is related that Sahl was asked about the wound of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, on the Day of Uhud. He said, “The face of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was wounded, his front-tooth broken and his helmet was smashed on his head. Fatima, peace be upon her, washed the blood away while ‘Ali held the water. When she saw that it increased the bleeding, she took a mat and burned it until it was ash and then applied it and the bleeding stopped.”

VI: The evidence that the khumus is for the needs of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the poor. The preference of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, for the People of the Suffa and widows. When Fatima complained to him about grinding and milling and asked him to give her a servant from the captives, he told her to trust in Allah

2945. It is related from ‘Ali, “Fatima, peace be upon her, complained of what she endured from the mill for grinding, and she heard that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had taken captives. She went to him to ask for a servant and she did not find him. She mentioned it to ‘A’isha. When the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came, ‘A’isha mentioned that to him. He came to him when we had gone to bed and we went to get up and he said, ‘Stay where you are’ until I felt the coolness of his feet on my chest. He said, ‘Shall I indicate to you two what is better than what you asked for? When you go to bed, say “Allah is greater” thirty-four times, “Praise be to Allah” thirty-three times, and “Glory be to Allah” thirty-three times. That is better for you than what you asked for.'”

XX: Throwing the corpses of idolaters into a well and not taking any price for them

3014. It is related that ‘Abdullah said, “While the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was in prostration, surrounded by some of the idolaters of Quraysh, ‘Uqba ibn Abi Mu’ayt brought the foetal membrance of a young camel and threw it on the back of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He did not raise his head until Fatima peace be upon her came and removed it from his back. Then he pronounced an invocation against those who had done that. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘O Allah! Destroy the council of Quraysh! O Allah, destroy Abu Jahl ibn Hisham, ‘Utba ibn Rabi’a, Shayba ibn Rabi’a, ‘Uqba ibn Abi Mu’ayt, and Umayya ibn Khalaf! (or and Ubayy ibn Khalaf)’ I saw them killed on the day of Badr and they were thrown into the well, except for Umayya or Ubayy. He was a fat man and when they dragged him, his joints separated before he was thrown into the well.”

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, went to Fatima’s Peace Be Upon Her house and did not find ‘Ali at home. He said, ‘Where is your cousin?’ She said, ‘We had a difference of opinion and he got angry with me and went out. He did not take his mid-day nap here with me.’ The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to someone, ‘See where he is.’ He came back and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, he is sleeping in the mosque.’ The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, went and found ‘Ali lying there. His cloak had fallen from on top of him and had become covered with dust. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, began to dust it off, saying, ‘Get up, Abu Turab (Dusty one)! Get up, Abu Turab!'”

XLIII. Someone who has a private conversation in front of the people and the one who did not disclose the secret of his companions but discloses it when he has died

5928. Masruq related that ‘A’isha, the Umm al-Mu’minin, said, “We, the wives of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, were all with him, and none of us had left when Fatima, peace be upon her, came walking. By Allah, her gait was much like that of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. When he saw her, he welcomed her and said, ‘Welcome, my daughter!’ and then he had her sit to his right or to his left and then she confided something to her and she wept profusely. When he saw her sorrow, he confided something else to her and she laughed. I was the only one of his wives who said to her, ‘The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, singled you out for a secret from among us and then you wept.” When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, got up and left, I asked her, ‘What did he confide to you?’ She said, ‘I will not divulge the secret of the Messenger of Allah.’ When he died, I said to her, ‘I insist? on you by what right I have on you to tell me.; She said, ‘Now I will do it.’ She told me and said, ‘As for what he confided to me the first time, he told him that Jibril used to present the Qur’an to him once a year. He said, “This year, he has presented it to me twice. I only think that my time is approaching. Fear Allah and be steadfast. I am an excellent predecessor for you.”‘ She said, ‘Then I wept as you say. When he saw my distress, he confided to me a second time and said, “Fatima, are you not pleased that you will be the mistress of the believing women or the mistress of the women of this community?'”

Translation: Thuwayr reported his father as saying that Sayyidina Ali(Alaih Salam) held him by his hand aid, ‘Come, let us pay a sick visit to Husayn .“ There they found Sayyidina Abu Musa (RA) with him. Sayyidina Ali asked him, “Have you come to pay a sick visit, 0 Abu Musa, or just a regular visit?” He said, “I have come to visit the sick.” So, Ali said, “I heard Allah’s Messenger (SAW)say : If a Muslim pays visit to a sick Muslim in the morning, seventy thousand angels pray for him till evening, and if he pays him the sick visit at night then seventy thousand angels pray for him till morning, and there is (also) a garden for him in Paradise.”

Translation:  Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-‘As: We buried a deceased person in the company of the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him). When we had finished, the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) returned and we also returned with him. When he approached his door, he stopped, and we saw a woman coming towards him. He (the narrator) said: I think he recognized her. When she went away, we came to know that she was Fatimah(A.S)The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said to her: What brought you out of your house, Fatimah? She replied: I came to the people of this house, Apostle of Allah, and I showed pity and expressed my condolences to them for their deceased relation. The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said: You might have gone to the graveyard with them.    She replied: I seek refuge in Allah! I heard you referring to what you mentioned. He said: If you had gone to the graveyard…He then mentioned severe words about it. I then asked Rabi’ah (a narrator of this tradition) about al-kuda (stony land). He replied: I think it means the graves.
