The Four Principles of Tasāwwūf

■ The Four Principles of Tasāwwūf

Without these four foundations, the spiritual path becomes nothing more than an empty form, a lifeless shell devoid of its living reality.

Outward practices may remain, but without these principles the heart is not purified, the soul is not refined, and the seeker does not attain the station of Ihsan.

■ Definition of Tasāwwūf

Tasāwwūf is the inward science of Islam: the purification of the soul (tazkiyat al-nafs), the refinement of character, and the cleansing of the heart from all that veils it from Allāh. It is the path of spiritual excellence (Ihsan), whereby the servant worships Allāh with complete sincerity, presence, and love.

▪︎ The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said:

“Ihsan is to worship Allāh as though you see Him; and if you do not see Him, then indeed
He sees you.”

(Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Iman, Hadith of Jibril; Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Iman.)

Tasāwwūf is therefore not separate from Islām; rather, it is its inward dimension. As the body cannot live without the soul, the outward actions of Islām are perfected through the inward purification cultivated by Tasāwwūf.

▪︎ Imām Bahauddin Naqshband, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, said:

“Our way is companionship, and all goodness is in gathering with the righteous.”

(Rashahat ‘Ayn al-Hayat.)

▪︎ He also said:

“This path is built on two things: keeping the commandments of Allāh and following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.”

(Rashahat ‘Ayn al-Hayat.)

■ The Four Principles

1. Knowing the Intention and Purpose of the Path

Every journey begins with intention. The seeker must know that his destination is not miracles, unveilings, spiritual rank, or the praise of people, but Allāh alone.

“My Lord, You alone are my goal, and Your pleasure alone is what I seek.”

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said:

“Actions are only by intentions, and every person shall have only what he intended.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1; Sahih Muslim.)

▪︎ Shah Naqshband, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, said:

“The intention of the seeker must be pure, without desire for station or unveiling, but solely for the Face of Allāh.”

(Rashahat ‘Ayn al-Hayat.)

2. The Presence of a Shaykh and Spiritual Guide

The path to Allāh is subtle, and the ego possesses hidden deceptions that a person seldom perceives on his own. For this reason, the Masters of Tasāwwūf have unanimously emphasized companionship with a realised spiritual guide whose chain reaches the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ.

▪︎ Allāh, the Exalted, says:

“O you who believe! Fear Allāh and be with the truthful.”

(Sūrah At-Tawbah 9:119)

▪︎ It has been said:

“Were it not for the educator, I would not have known my Lord.”

▪︎ Khwaja Ubaydullah Ahrar, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, said:

“The light of the path is extinguished without companionship with a living guide.”

(Rashahat ‘Ayn al-Hayat; Silsilat al-‘Arifin.)

▪︎ Imam Bahauddin Naqshband, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, said:

“Deriving benefit from the Shaykh depends upon the strength of connection and love towards him.”

(Rashahat ‘Ayn al-Hayat.)

3. The Presence of a Sincere Disciple

A righteous Shaykh alone is not sufficient.
The disciple must also possess sincerity, humility, patience, obedience, and beautiful manners (adab). The vessel must be prepared before it can receive Divine wisdom.

▪︎ It has been said:

“Do not ask your Shaykh for more if you have not acquired the manners of a disciple.”

▪︎ Khwaja Muhammad Ma’sum, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, said:

“The fruit of discipleship is annihilation in the Shaykh (fana’ fi’l-Shaykh), which leads to annihilation in the Messenger (fana’ fi’l-Rasul), and ultimately to annihilation in Allah (fana’ fi’Llah).”

(Maktubat of Khwaja Muhammad Ma’sum.)

4. Strict Adherence to the Book and Sunnāh

The Masters of Tasāwwūf have always affirmed that there is no Tariqāh without Shari’ah. Every spiritual state, inspiration, and unveiling must be weighed against the Qur’ān and the Sunnāh.

▪︎ Almighty Allāh says:

“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allāh you have an excellent example.”

(Surah al-Ahzab 33:21)

▪︎ Imam Junayd al-Baghdadi, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, said:

“All paths are closed except for those who follow the footsteps of the Messenger ﷺ.”

(Al-Risalah al-Qushayriyyah; Hilyat al-Awliya’.)

▪︎ Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, said:

“O young man, fly towards the Truth on the wings of the Book and the Sunnāh.”

(Al-Fath al-Rabbani; Futuh al-Ghayb.)

▪︎ Shaykh Ahmad al-Rifa’i, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, said:

“Whoever does not weigh his words, actions, and states against the Book and the Sunnāh will not be recorded among our men.”

(Al-Burhan al-Mu’ayyad.)

▪︎ Shaykh Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret said:

“If your unveiling contradicts the Book and the Sunnāh, hold fast to the Book and the Sunnāh and abandon the unveiling.”

(Lata’if al-Minan by Ibn ‘Ata’ Allah al-Iskandari.)

▪︎ Imam Bahauddin Naqshband, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, said:

“We prefer silent dhikr because it preserves the dignity of the Sharīʿah and avoids ostentation.”

(Rashahat ‘Ayn al-Hayat.)

Thus, with these four foundations, pure intention, a realised guide, sincere discipleship, and unwavering adherence to the Qur’an and Sunnāh, the seeker walks upon light towards the Presence of Allāh.

Through them the soul is purified, the heart is illuminated, and the servant gradually attains the station of Ihsan. From Allāh alone comes all success and guidance.

And Almighty Allāh knows best.
