Jumada Al-Akhirah Hijri 36
After the martyrdom of Amir-ul-Mominin Hazrat Uthman Radiallahu anhoo the people of Bani Umaiyya who were very quarrelsome fled from Medina Munawara to Mecca-e-Muazzama. After coming to Mecca, they presented the stories of Hazrat Uthman Radiallahu anhoo killing, in such a way that in the people of Mecca, there arise a very powerful sentimental force to take revenge of Hazrat Uthman Radiallahu murder. Hazrat Ayesha SalamUllahAlaiha, while going to Medina-eMunawara after performing Hajj-the holy pilgrimage, received the news of Hazrat Uthman Radiallahu anhoo martyrdom and Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam selection as Caliph. But, there was unrest in Medina. After receiving this news, she returned to Mecca. The reports she received about the atmosphere prevalent at Medina, were only the fake descriptions from Marwan and his quarrelsome people who had fled from Medina. Due to these descriptions, the people of Mecca were bent upon taking the revenge of Hazrat Uthman Radiallahu anhoo murder. In the same way, Hazrat Ayesha SalamUllahAlaiha also came under the impression of all this and became very much sentimental for taking revenge of Hazrat Uthman Radiallahu anhoo eye murder, forgetting that Huzurﷺ wives should not take part in politics, neither should they act according to the popular talks which are full of subjective prejudices and are results of vested interests. They should be confined to their home only. It is said in the Holy Quran: Translation: “You,
please sit silently in your houses and do not try to exhibit yourself like other uncultured and raw women.” (Surah-e-Ahzab)
But Hazrat Ayesha SalamUllahAlaiha was so much impressed by those people that she announced, “O people! Take the revenge of Hazrat Uthman Radiallahu anhoo murder and save Islam’s reputation.” (Tabarani) During this period, Hazrat Talha Radiallahu anhoo and Hazrat Zubeir Radiallahu anhoo also came down to Mecca. From them, also the news of Hazrat Uthman Radiallahu anhoo murder was confirmed to Hazrat Ayesha SalamUllahAlaiha. Now, Hazrat Ayesha SalamUllahAlaiha started inviting people for the revenge of Hazrat Uthman Radiallahu anhoo killing. Hazrat Talha Radiallahu anhoo and Hazrat Zubeir Radiallahu anhoo also joined this movement of revenge.
Here, all these gentries jointly committed a mistake. And very few people are saved from making such mistakes. These older people mistook a path of revenge of Hazrat Uthman Radiallahu anhoo assassination. For, the revenge (or justice) is the duty of the state government. The public has no right to take the law in their hands. Hence, to take revenge of ‘eye for an eye’ justice by the people is a fundamental misdeed.
People to be invited by Hazrat Ayesha SalamUllahAlaiha, for an ‘eye for an eye’ revenge for the victimized Caliph, was not an ordinary thing. Thousands of people were prepared to fight and sacrifice their lives. Abdullah Ibn-e-Aamir Hazarami was the first to come forward with an announcement, “Whoever is ready to join us in this movement and fight, please come forward. If you do not have arms and armaments, we will provide that.” Weapons, including expenses, were made available for the riders, wherein Yala Ibne-Umaiyya presented a significant amount. Marwan and his nuisance companions who had fled from Medina and came to Mecca also joined this movement, nay, they were among the leaders of the whole mission. They were adding fuel to the fire. The movement initiated by Hazrat Ayesha SalamUllahAlaiha single-handedly, now, had become the movement of thousands of people.
The real facts of this movement. It should be very well remembered that the purpose of this movement was to take revenge for the murder of Hazrat Uthman Radiallahu anhoo. Hazrat Talha, Hazrat
Zubair Radiallahu anhoo and their companions had no enmity with Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam, nor they wanted to fight with him. They did not move ahead for the war against Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam (Aini Vol. 7)
Departure towards Basra
Hazrat Ayesha SalamUllahAlaiha wished to move towards Medina, for, the killer of Hazrat Uthman Radiallahu anhoo was there, and he should be punished. No it had been known that Hazrat Talha and Hazrat Zubeir Radiallahu anhoo purpose was not to fight with Hazrat Ali AlaihisSalam The verdict of the people was that Hazrat’s line of thinking was the same as that of the Ummul Mominin. But now, thousands of communities were in support which abandoned the whole tradition of Ummul Mominin. They all forced to go to Basra and convinced the real leaders, “Unless we have ample money, sufficient arms and armaments, in addition to man-power, we would not be able to take the revenge of Hazrat Uthman Radiallahu anhoo murder. In Basra, there is a treasure of Iraq which is full of gold and other wealth. First of all, let us take away the Bait-ulMaal and increase our monetary power so that we will be able to employ more paid people and consequently, enhancing our powers.”
How could Hazrat Talha, Hazrat Zubeir and other great gentries accept such a malicious plan? But the impression of this thought was so strong that thousands of people were drawn away by a turbulent flow. The mass was full of sentiments of revenge. And, when a man is sentimental, his understanding and thinking faculty is dumb-founded. By sentimental blackmailing, the people with vested interest poisoned the ears of the people with a variety of fake stories. They might have told that except the loot of Basra’s wealth, there was no other option of taking revenge of Hazrat Uthman Radiallahu anhoo assassination. They might have said,
“We believe ‘eye for an eye’ justice for the revenge of Hazrat Uthman Radiallahu anhoo killing. For us, it is the service to religion. Hence, unless we follow this line of action, the movement of revenge can never be successful. Our not can never following this course of action will deprive us of the opportunity to serve the religion. Thus, looting Bait-ul-Maal is not loot, but it is a service to religion.”
Whatever may be the situation, Hazrat Ayesha SalamUllahAlaiha event army left for Basra . from Mecca during the month of Safar of Hijri 35. This was not an ordinary matter. What would be the repercussions of this? All the wise and intelligent people of Mecca-e-Muazzama were against this step. They were so sad about this departure that each one of them was weeping with sobs. Never before, had they wept so much, as they did now thinking about the loss to Islam. The weeping was so significant that henceforth, the day was recognized and stamped as “a day of weeping (Yowm ulNaheeb).” (Tibri Vol-VI)
The people like Marvan etc. who have vested interests only out of their selfish purposes, usually join together; here too they all joined the revolutionary movements. Their main task was to add fuel to the fire. On the way, they found a place with water which is known as Haw’ab. It is said that Hazrat Ayeshabitant heard the barking of dogs. On asking, it was found that its name was (Haw’ab). She said,
“Let me go back. Huzur ﷺ has told me that I should not join with the people on whom the dogs are barking.”
And she firmly insisted that she would not go further. This was the pious annihilation of the ego. She was very much in favour of taking revenge of Hazrat Uthman Radiallahu anhoo murder. But when she remembered Hadith and found that her going with those people was wrong, she was bent upon going back. But the selfish people betrayed her and forty people declared on oath that the name of the place was not (Haw’ab). How can the oath of so many people be falsified? Hazrat Ayesha SalamUllahAlaiha it had to agree and had to go ahead with them.
When the army was nearby Basra, for the protection of Bait ul Maal, Basra’s Hakem, Hazrat Uthman-bin-Hanif prevented Hazrat Ayesha’s army. The war was declared, and the army of Basra was defeated. Many people of Basra, including Uthman-bin-Hanif, were arrested. Uthman was released, but many people of Basra were killed with the conviction that they belonged to the group of Hazrat Uthman Radiallahu anhoo are killer. The bitter result of this was that many people were hostile and went against Hazrat Ayesha SalamUllahAlaiha movement.
