The prophet who asked Allah to STOP THE SUN and yes Allah did it
You probably know about Musa parting the Red Sea. You know about Ibrahim surviving the fire. You know about Isa bringing the dead back to life.
But do you know about the prophet who asked the SUN to stop moving and it FROZE in the sky?
His name was Yusha ibn Nun (Joshua, son of Nun). He was Musa’s assistant, companion, and eventually his successor.
After Musa died, Allah chose Yusha to lead Bani Israel into the Promised Land – the land Musa’s generation refused to enter because they were too scared.
Yusha was given a mission: “Take Bani Israel, enter the Holy Land, and conquer the cities inside it.”
But there was a problem. One of the enemy cities they needed to conquer was HEAVILY fortified. And if they didn’t capture it before sunset on Friday, they’d have to wait until after the Sabbath (Saturday) to attack again.
Why? Because Bani Israel were forbidden from fighting on the Sabbath. It was their day of rest, commanded by Allah.
So Yusha had a very tight window. They HAD to finish the battle before Friday sunset or wait another day giving the enemy time to reinforce.
The battle started. It was INTENSE. The Muslims were winning, but the sun was setting FAST. They were running out of time.
Yusha looked at the sky. The sun was about to disappear over the horizon. If it set, the Sabbath would begin and they’d have to stop fighting.
So he did something NO human had ever done before or since. He raised his hands to the SKY and commanded the SUN itself:
“O sun, you are under Allah’s command and I am under Allah’s command. O Allah, stop the sun for us!”
And the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ narrated what happened next: “The sun was held back for him until Allah gave him victory.” (Sahih Bukhari 3124, Sahih Muslim 1747)
Read that again. The SUN. Was. HELD. BACK.
It stopped moving in the sky. Time itself paused. The sunset delayed. The battle continued. And Yusha conquered the city before the Sabbath began.
Can you imagine the level of faith that takes? You’re in the middle of a battle, the sun is setting, and you COMMAND THE SUN to stop because you trust that Allah will answer?
Most of us can’t even make dua for small things with confidence.
This man commanded the cosmos and it OBEYED because Allah granted his request.
The scholars explain that this miracle shows multiple things:
1. Prophets have access to miracles we can’t even imagine
Yusha wasn’t asking for gold or power. He was asking for TIME to complete a mission Allah had given him. And Allah rearranged the solar system to help him.
2. Allah controls EVERYTHING in creation
The sun moves according to precise physical laws. Gravity, rotation, orbit – all scientific. But those laws bow to Allah’s will. When Yusha asked, Allah said “Stop” and the sun stopped.
3. The dua of a sincere servant is POWERFUL
Yusha wasn’t making this dua for personal gain. He was doing Allah’s work. Conquering the land Allah had commanded them to conquer. And Allah supported him with a cosmic miracle.
Now ypu may want to ask Where is this in the Quran?
The Quran doesn’t mention Yusha by name. But it mentions the story of Bani Israel entering the Promised Land after Musa in Surah Al-Ma’idah.
The detailed story of the sun stopping is preserved in authentic hadith – Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim both document it from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
The Prophet ﷺ said “The sun was never held back for any human being except for Yusha.” (Sahih Muslim 1747)
Meaning this miracle was UNIQUE to Yusha. It never happened before him. Never happened after him. It’s SEALED to him alone.
Now here is The lesson for us today
Yusha teaches us something profound. When you’re doing something for ALLAH’S sake – not for yourself, but for His mission – make BIG duas. Ask for the impossible. Because Allah can do the impossible.
Don’t limit Allah’s power in your mind. Don’t think
“Oh this is too big, Allah won’t do this for me.”
Yusha asked the SUN to stop and it stopped. Your request to Allah is probably way smaller than that. So why are you doubting He’ll answer?
The condition? Make sure you’re doing it for ALLAH, not for your ego. Yusha didn’t want to delay the sunset to show off. He wanted it so he could complete the mission Allah gave him.
When your intentions are pure and your mission is for Allah, ask BIG. Expect BIG. Because you worship a Lord who stops the sun when His servants need it.
