The glad tidings were conveyed to Sayyidina Ibrahim and Sarah AlahisSalam through the angels who were on their way to the people of Lut at Madayn to punish them for their evil ways. This incident is narrated in some detail in Surah Hud, verses 69 to 73. The Messengers of Allah (His angels) came to Ibrahim with the good news. They greeted him and he greeted them and he brought for them a roasted calf but became afraid of them when they did not extend their hands to eat it. They asked him to fear them not and informed him that they were sent to the people of Lut 2. His wife, Sarah, was standing there and she laughed and they conveyed to them the good news of Sayyidina Ishaq and from him Sayyidina Ya’qub . She lamented that she was an old woman and her husband an old man, so it would be a surprising thing to expect. They asked if she was surprised at Allah’s working and convinced them that Allah’s mercy and Favours were upon the household of Ibrahim. Surely, Allah is Praiseworthy and Glorious.

According to the People of the Book, Sayyidina Ya’qub AlahisSalam was the one who had laid the foundations of the mosque Al-Aqsa.

Allah commanded Messenger, His chosen one and friend, the leader of the upright and the parent of the Prophets, Ibrahim AlahisSalam to build the Bayt Al-Ateeq, the first mosque for the general people. They may then worship Him there. Allah pointed out the place to him. According to the Commander of the Faithful, Hazrat Ali Ibn Abu Talib AlaihisSalam , the Ka’bah is in the same position as the Bayt Al-Ma’mur in the heavens in that if it were to be allowed to fall down, it would drop over it. In the same way there are the houses of worship in the seven heavens. There is a house for worship of Allah on each heaven, and that is like the Ka’bah, is for the people of earth. So, Allah commanded Sayyidina Ibrahim AlahisSalam to build a House for Him which may be for the people of earth as those houses are for the angels in the heavens. And Allah pointed out to him the spot on which the House should stand. This spot was reserved for it since the time the heavens and earth were created, as is confirmed in Bukhari and Muslim. “No doubt, Allah has made this place a sanctuary since the creation of the heavens and the earth. And will remain a sanctuary till the Day of Resurrection.

That is, it was built by Prophet Ibrahim AlahisSalam, the father of the Prophets after him and the leader of the upright of his offspring who followed him and attached themselves to his practice. Also, (the Station of Ibrahim) (Aal-Imran 3:97) that is, the stone on which he stood up to raise the wall helped by his son. The stone was conjoined to a wall of the Ka’bah from ancient times to the era of Sayyidina Umar He removed it a little away from the House so that those who circumambulate and those who pray on the stone do not disturb each other. He was right in doing

as indeed he was right in certain other things like his wish to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ“Would that you took the Maqam of Ibrahim as a place of Salat!” (Bukhari # 4483) So, the verse 125 of al – Baqarah was revealed;

Take to yourselves Ibrahim’s station as a place of Salat. The imprints of his feet were visible on the stone during the early days of Islam.

The offices of Prophet and Messenger ended with him for Allah perfected religion of Islam with this Messenger and gave him what was not given to anyone before him. His message was directed to all the people on earth irrespective of their descent, language or nature. It was directed to all the regions, cities and periods of time upto the Day of Resurrection.

Prophet Ibrahim AlahisSalam deserved high rank and honours in the heavens for his efforts in raising the Ka’bah on earth. His ranks are raised and he has been placed in the Bayt-Al-Ma’mur, the Ka’bahı of the folk of the seven heavens. Seventy thousand angels enter it every day but they will not get a second chance until the Day of Resurrection.

Suddi has said that when Allah commanded Ibrahim and Isma’il AlahisSalam stock to build the House they did not know where to begin. that is, where it should be built. So, Allah sent wind and it was called al – Khajooj – with two wings and a head resembling a snake’s. It sweeped the surroundings of the Ka’bah for them to reveal the foundations. They followed it and dug up the ground and laid its foundations.

When they had raised the pillars and built the corners. Sayyidina Ibrahim

asked Isma’il AlaihisSalam, “My son! Bring me a good stone that I may place it here.” He said, “O father, I am tired and grown lazy.” He said, “In spite of that go! Bring it!” but Jibril then came with a black stone from India. It was pure white and Aadam had brought it from Paradise but it had turned black because of the sins of men.

Soon Isma’il AlaihisSalam came with a stone and found one already placed in the corner. “O father,” he said, “Who has brought you that?” he said, “One who is more active than you.” “So, they built the House, praying to Allah meanwhile “Our Lord, Accept from us. Surely You are All-Hearing, All-Knowing.”

Ibn Abu Hatim has said that it is built in five forms. Zulqarnayn the King of the world at that time passed by there while they were building it. He asked, “Who has commanded you to build it Sayyidina Ibrahim said,

Allah has commanded us to build it.” He said, “I do not understand what you say.” Al-Azraqi has said that he circumambulated the Ka’balı with Sayyidina Ibrahim AlahisSalam

The Ka’bah remained the way Sayyidina Ibrahim AlahisSalam had built it a long period. Then the Quraysh built it. They shortened it from the north side from the pillars of Sayyidina Ibrahim AlahisSalam till to its position as seen till today.

There is a Hadith in Bukhari and Muslim from Sayyidah Ayshah Radiallahu anhoo

had informed him about the directions of the Messenger of Allah رضی الله تعالى عنها

The Messenger of Allahﷺ asked, “Do you not see that your people when they built the Ka’bah shortened it from the foundation of Sayyidina Ibrahim”. “She said, “O Messenger of Allah! Will you not rebuild it on the foundation of Ibrahim?” He said, “Were it not for your people being so close to the Days of ignorance – or infidelity – I would have spent the treasure of the Ka’balı for the sake of Allah and brought its door on the ground and I would have put the stone inside”. Then Ibn Zubayr built it according to how his aunt Sayyidah Ayshah

When he was killed by Hajjaj in the year 73 Hajjaj wrote to Khalifah Ibn Abdul Malik bin Marwan that he believed Ibn Zubayr had built it according to his own whims. So, he commanded that Ibn Zubayr’s work must be undone. The northern wall was demolished and the stone was taken out. A boundary wall was raised, the stones were piled inside the Ka’bah and the eastern door was raised high. The western door was shut completely as is seen today. Then, when he learnt that Ibn Zubayr had done only according to what Sayyidah Ayshah Radiallahu anhoo has all this, had told him, he regretted his act. He felt sorry and wished that he had not done it. Later, Khalifah Al-Mahdi bin Al-Mansur consulted Imam Malik bin Anas about it and asked whether he should restore it as Ibn Zubayr had built it. However, the Imam suggested that it should be left as it was. He said, “I fear that kings will take it up as a pursuit and every king will build it as he likes.” So, it was left as we see it today

When Ibrahim AlahisSalam endured the great difficulties that Allah had commanded him to go through, Allah made him a leader for mankind. He led them and guided them and he asked Allah to perpetuate the leadership among his progeny. His prayer was granted with the exception of the evildoers. The righteous scholars of his offspring were promised this honour.

Every Book that was revealed on a Prophet after Sayyidina Ibrahim was one of his offspring. This was a great honour and a distinction of a high degree. And that begins with his two sons – both great: · Isma’il from Hajarah AlaihisSalam and Ishaq from Sarah AlahisSalam. From the latter descended Ya’qub (also known as Israil) **. All the tribes were related to him and Prophethood was bestowed on them. So many Prophets were there from him that no one knows their number except He Who sent them and chase them with Messengership or Prophethood until the line ended with Sayyidina ‘Eesa bin Maryam of the Banu Isra’il

As for Isma’il the Arabs descended from him irrespective of their tribes. No Prophet is known from him except the final of them, the Seal of the Prophets and the chief of them, the pride of the children of Aadam in the earth and the Hereafter, Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ bin Abdullah bin Abdul Muttalib bin Hashim, the Quraish, the Makki and the Madani We find none in this noble line and exalted branch but this splendid jewel and shining pearl and a means to enviable faith he is the Leader in whom everyone takes pride and on the Day of Resurrection the foremost and the later ones will envy him.

Indeed, he has said, “I will attain a rank that the creatures will crave for, each of them even Ibrahim.

Ibn Abbas Radiallahu anhoo has narrated that the Prophet ﷺon used to seek refuge with Allah for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn and say

I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from every devil and poisonous pest and from every evil eye. (Bukhari # 3371)

In Surah Al-Baqarah verse 260, the Qur’an recalls for us the question of Sayyidina Ibrahim AlahisSalam to Allah, “Show me how You give life to the dead.” So, Allah commanded him to tame four birds and incline them to him and then cut them to pieces and mix their pieces together, this one with that, and so on. Then to divide them into portions and place each portion on different mountains. He did just he was commanded. Then he was asked to call them with permission of his Lord. When he called them each portion flew to the parent body and each feather combined with its pair and so the body was reconstructed as it was before. Sayyidina Ibrahim watched the Power of One Who merely says to anything, “Be” and it becomes. So, the birds came to him quickly. It is also said that he was commanded to hold the heads of all the birds in his hands and each body as it was formed came to him and joined with its head. Indeed there is no God but Allah.

In Surah Aal-Imran, (Verses 65-68) Allah asks the People of Book why they dispute concerning Ibrahim AlahisSalam whether he was a Jew or a Christian for he was none of them but an upright man of pure faith, a Muslim. Both the Torah and Injil were revealed after him. Those who are closest to him are they who followed him, and Prophet – Muhammad ﷺ. Allah had explained from him the religion as He had explained to Sayyidina Ibrahim and perfected it for him and granted him what He had not given to any Prophet or Messenger before him.

The Prophetﷺ met Prophet Ibrahim on the seventh heaven during his Miraj or ascension to the heavens in his night journey. Sayyidina Ibrahim was leaning on the Bayt Al-Ma’mur in which seventy thousand angels enter daily never again to be able to go in again.

Abu Hurayrah has reported that the Messenger of Allah said, “The noble son of the noble son, of the noble son, of the noble Yusuf bin Ya’qub bin Ishaq bin Ibrahim the friend of the Compassionate.”

There is a Hadith in Bukhari from Abu Hurayrah as: Someone asked, “Messenger of Allah! Who is the most honourable amongst the people with Allah?” He said, “Al-Muttaqun (the most pious)” They exclaimed, “We do not ask about that.” He said, Yusuf, the Prophet of Allah, son of a Prophet of Allah, son of a Prophet of Allah, son of the friend of Allah.” They said, “We do not ask of that”. He said, “Then do you ask about the descent of Arabs? They said, “Yes.” He said, “Those of them who were best in pre-Islamic times will be the best in Islam provided they comprehend the religious knowledge.” Bukhan # 3353

Hafiz Abu Bakr Al-Bazar has transmitted a Hadith narrated by Abu Hurayrah ties that in Paradise there is a palace in which there is no crevice and no defect whatsoever. Allah has prepared it for His friend, Ibrahim AlaihisSalam

A Hadith has been narrated by Ibn Abbas avotion that he heard the Prophet , say, “So far as Ibrahim is concerned, you may see your companion, and as for Musa he is a well built man with wheat complexion, (riding) on a red -camel with its halter made of the fibre of date-palm as if I am seeing him as he goes down the valley.”

Ibn Jarir has stated in his Tarikh (Tarikh Tabari) that Sayyidina Ibrahim the was born in the times of Nimrud bin Kan’an, the tyrant king. His astrologers had warned him that a child would be born who would subsequently dethrone him. So, he had forbidden men to approach their wives and he killed all infants born during that time. Sayyidina Ibrahim AlahisSalam was born in this duration,

His wife Sarah AlaihisSalam died while he was alive in the village Habrun in Kan’an.

He then married Ishaq AlahisSalam to Rafaqa bint Batuil. He himself married Qantura ‘and had children from her.

It is said that Ibrahim to died suddenly. Some people say that he died after an illness and was buried in the same graveyard as Sarah AlahisSalam was.

Yahya bin Sa’eed bin Al-Musayib has said, “Ibrahim was the first entertain guests, to circumcise, to trim the mustaches, to see gray hair and say, ‘O Lord! What is this?’ And Allah said, ‘Dignity.’ So he said ‘My Lord! Increase me in dignity!” His

grave and the graves of his son Ishaq and of his son Ya’qub

are in the square built by Sulayman bin Dawud AlahisSalam in Habrun. This place is now known as Al-Khalil. This information has come to us continuously and from generation to generation from the times of the Banu Isra’il to our own times but we have no authentic confirmation in this regard from the Prophetﷺ

Sayyidina Ibrahim lived for a hundred and seventy five years ninety year according to some people.

The first child of Sayyidina Ibrahim AlahisSalam was Sayyidina Isma’il AlaihisSalam He was born to Sayyidah Hajarah AlaihisSalam. Sayyidina Ishaq AlahisSalam was his second son and he was born to Sayyidah Sarah daughter of the paternal uncle of Sayyidina Ibrahim . After she died, he married Qantura daughter of Yaqtan and had six children from her Madyan, Zamran, Sarj, Yaqshan and Nashq while the sixth is not named. He married after her Hajun daughter of Amin and she gave birth to five children, Kisan, Suraj, Ameem, Lutan and Nafis.

This is what is mentioned in At-Ta‘reef wa Al A’lam by Abu Al-Qasim Al-Suhayli.
