Muawiyeen are the followers of Muawiya who claim him to be Khalifa-e-Rashid and Ameer-ul-Momineen and equate him in status with Khulafa-e-Rashideen. They have a strange logic. They claim they are defenders of Muawiya
Followers of this sect single out Muawiya among Sahabah for over praise and over-glorification; knowing fully well that their action undermines the importance and sacrifices made by Khulafa-e-Rashideen, Hadhrat Ali and other members of Ahle Bait-e-At Haar ( رضئ الله تعالی عنهم اجمعين ) in the eyes of the people. They insist on the greatness of Muawiya ; claim him to be Khalifa-e-Rashid and Ameer-ul-Momineen and equate him in status with Khulafa-e-Rashideen in spite of the fact that he accepted Islam after the fall of Makka (Suyuti, Tabari, Ibn Hisham), a year before the death of Prophet Mohammad ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم ). They ignore the mandatory requirement of distinction in the status among Sahabah as stipulated by Quran and Sunnah.
There was a long and deadly conflict during the first century Hijri between Khulafa-e-Rashideen and Ahle Bait-e-At Haar on one side and Muawiya and his associates on the other side in which hundreds of thousands of Sahabah, Taba’een and Muslims were killed. The most tragic incident was the battle of Siffeen in which over 70,000 people were killed. The protracted conflict lasted for over a decade; at the end of which Muawiya succeeded in deposing Rashidun Caliphate. Read more on the following links.
It is consensus of Muslim Ummah for the past 1400 years that Muawiya was the first King of (Umayyed) dynastic rule that lasted for 90 years.
Muawiyeen equate Hadrat Ali ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) with Muawiya in spite of the fact that Hadhrat Ali ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) was the Khalifa-e-Rashid, Amir ul Momineen and Head of Islamic nation and Muawiya was a Governor of a Province under him.
They conduct Seminars, Conferences, to emphasize the greatness of Muawiya in the eyes of the people.
We have discussed in detail about the beliefs and claims of this sect in this Article.
The Article is divided into two sections, as follows:
(A) – Muawiyeen and their beliefs.
(B) – Ahle Sunah Aqeedah about Muawiya
References have been provided all through the Article, and we have refrained from giving our personal opinions as far as possible.
It is important that Muslims know historical facts to keep their Iman in tact. If we falter on this issue, there is a chance that we will form certain disrespectful opinions about Khulafa-e-Rashideen and Ahle Bait-e-At Haar ( رضئ الله تعالی عنهم اجمعين ) and go astray. We hope our readers will benefit from this important information.
MUAWIYEEN AND THEIR BELIEFS
Muawiya Ibn Abu Sufyan has been a subject of debate among Muslims for about 1400 years. He is praised by some people and condemned by others. Also there are differences of opinion among Ahle Sunnah Ulema about him.
There are 2 distinct groups among Muslims in this context.
MUAWIYEEN – Those who single out Muawiya among Sahabah and spend their lives in his over-glorification knowing fully well that their behavior undermines the importance and sacrifices made by Khulafa-e-Rashideen and Ahle Baite At Haar ( رضئ الله تعالی عنهم اجمعين ) in the eyes of people.
Every Muslim respects Sahabah and praises them individually and collectively. But Muawiyeen behave strangely. They praise one to undermine the other. They single out Muawiya among Sahabah and shower excessive praises and place him equal in status with Khulafa-e-Rashideen. In order to justify their behavior, they give references from Quran and Sunnah about generalized praise of Sahabah, and taking it as a cover, write books, conduct seminars, sing encomiums over-glorifying Muawiya in their choicest terms.
There are two sub groups of this category.
(a) Muawiyeen Grade (1)
Salafis, Ikhwan, Deobandis, and their like minded groups claim Muawiya was on Haq in his fight with Hadhrat Ali ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ). They claim that Hadhrat Ali ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) should have surrendered to Muawiya as was done by his son Imam Hassan ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ). They also claim that Yazid was a pious Khalifa. They add رضئ الله تعالی عنه with Yazid’s name and claim that Imam Hussain ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) was at fault. They also say Karbala was a political episode. They blame Imam Hussain ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) and claim he revolted against a just Khalifa. (Astaghfirullahal azeem).Watch the following video clip in which Aurangazeb Farooqi of Sipah-e-Sahabah Terrorist Group in Pakistan, a sub sect of Deobandis is over-glorifying Muawiya
(b) Muawiyeen Grade (2)
This Group claims that both Muawiya and Hadhrat Ali ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) were right in their fight with each other. They equate Muawiya with Hadhrat Ali ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) in spite of the fact that Hadhrat Ali ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) was the Khalifa-e-Rashid and Head of Islamic nation and Muawiya was a Governor of a Province under him. There were 12 provinces of Islamic State at that time. They choose Muawiya for their over-praise, write books, conduct Seminars, Conferences, shower accolades, sing praises and scream slogans and emphasize Muawiya’s importance and greatness among Sahabah. They claim Muawiya was Khalifa-e-Rashid and Amir-ul-Momineen. They proudly say that they are the defenders of Muawiya . They cite references from Quran and Sunnah about the praise of Sahabah in general, and taking it as a cover, over glorify Muawiya in the choicest terms possible.

Muawiyeen write encomiums in over praise of Muawiya to emphasize his greatness among Sahabah and Khulafa-e-Rashideen. They claim Muawiya is the Imam of Ahle Bait-e-At-haar (رضئ الله تعالی عنهم اجمعين).
Over-glorification of Muawiya seems an attempt on the part of Muawiyeen to justify their claim that he is equal in rank with other Khulafa-e-Rashideen.
Muawiyeen confuse Muslims from their misleading logic. They say all Sahabah are respectful and rightly guided. Based on this logic they claim that Muawiya is also rightly guided. Then they argue that since Muawiaya is rightly guided, therefore there is no difference between him and rightly guided Khulafa-e-Rashideen, Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali ( رضئ الله تعالی عنهم اجمعين ).
We cite here an example how Muslims were misled in the past in the same fashion. There have been some fake Prophets in the past who tried to mislead Muslims. First they explained to their followers that the meaning of the word “Nabi” is – ‘a person who gives information about the unseen’. Then they said, since they also receive information directly from God, in that sense they can also be regarded as ‘Nabi’. Once their followers accepted this logic, they gradually convinced their followers that they are the Prophets. Mirza Ghulam Ahmed Qadiyani and his followers are a glaring example in this context.
Distinction in the status among Sahabah is an established fact from Quran and Sunnah. If you do not keep this distinction in mind, you have strayed, you have lost the right path of Islam. There is consensus (Ijma) of Ahle Sunnah Ulema about the merits of Sahabah in the following order.(i) Khulafa-e-Rashideen, Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali ( رضئ الله تعالی عنهم اجمعین).(ii) The Ten Companionswho were promised paradise. (Tirmidhi, Abu Dawood, Ibn Maja).(iii) The Senior Companions who fought at Badr.(iv)The Companions who gave Bay’at al-Ridwân under the Tree.(v) The Companions who accepted Islam after the fall of Makka.
No one in the Islamic History ever claimed that Muawiya was a Khalifa-e-Rashid, except of course the followers of Muawiyeen sect. As a matter of fact the period of Khulafa-e-Rashideen was ended by Muawiya as he deposed Khulafa-e-Rashideen and became the founding King of a dynastic rule in Islam. There is consensus of Muslim Ummah on this issue.
Ulema – e – Muawiyeen and their followers do not accept the consensus of Islamic Ummah. They portray Muawiya as Khalifa-e-Rashed and claim that the period of Khulafa-e-Rashideen was 49 years
Read the following Prophet’s ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم ) Hadith which says that Khalifat-e-Rashida will remain for 30 years.
It is in Hadith – Safeena said : The Apostle of Allah ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم ) said: “Khilafah will be in my Ummah for thirty years, then there will be monarchy after that.” Then Safinah said : “count the Khilafah of Abu Bakr ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ),’ then count the Khilafah of Umar ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) and the Khilafah of Uthman ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ), and the Khilafah of Ali ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ).” He said: “So we found that they add up to thirty years.” Sa’eed said: “I said to him: ‘Banu Umayya claim that the Khilafah is among them.’ Safeena said : the sons of the blue woman (nick name for Umawi Grandmother) are liars; they are Kings of the worst kind”. ( Sunan Abu Dawood 4646, Jami Tirmidhi 2226. Salafi Scholar Al-Bani graded it as Saheeh). The above authentic Hadith about the prophecy of Prophet Mohammad ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم ) establishes the fact that Khilafat-e-Rashida will remain for 30 years. What is the status of people who fought in the Battle of Siffeen against Hadhrat Ali’s ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) ?An absolute majority of Ahle Sunnah Ulema say that they were rebels under the leadership of their leader Muawiya .Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) prophesied about it and declared them as rebels.
It is in Hadith – Ibn ‘Abbas ( رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ ) said to me and to his son Ali, “Go to Abu Sa’id ( رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ ) and listen to what he narrates.” So we went and found him in a garden looking after it. He picked up his Rida’, wore it and sat down and started narrating till the topic of the construction of the mosque reached. He said, “We were carrying one adobe at a time while ‘Ammaar ( رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ ) was carrying two. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) saw him and started removing the dust from his body and said, “May Allah be Merciful to ‘Ammaar ( رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ ). He will be killed by a rebellious, aggressive group. He will be inviting them to Paradise and they will invite him to Hell-fire.” ‘Ammaar ( رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ ) said, “I seek refuge with Allah from affliction.” (Bukhari 447, Muslim 7320)
Muawiyeen cite a reference in ‘Ghunia-tut-Talibeen’ a book attributed to Ghousul Azam Shaikh Abdul Qader Jeelani (رضئ الله تعالی عنه) in which there is mention of a Hadith which says that the power of Islam will continue for up to 35 or 36 or 37 years. This Hadith has been interpreted in the book saying that since Khilafat-e-Rashida ended in 30 years, therefore the additional 7 years period belonged to Muawiya This way Muawiya’s rule/khilafat is established.Following facts are presented by some people in this context.(a) The book Ghunia-tut-Talibeen has been edited/added by publishers in successive editions/translations. There are many translations available in the market which were carried out by Deobandis/Muawiyeen/Barailvi and their like minded groups.See the picture of the Urdu translation of the related page, andthe cover of the book, in which it is writtenthat the book has been edited and added based on the interpretations and research (تحقیق و تخریج کے ساتھ اضافہ شدہ ایڈیشن) by the people who are involved in this publication. When we see Gunniyatut Talibeen translated/edited/published by different people in different languages, we come across these differences as a routine. This is the reason it is advised that we should read books written/compiled by authentic Ahle Sunnah scholars so that your Iman remains intact.(b) The Hadith does not specify that the Caliphate will last for 37 years. It says that ‘power of Islam will be for 35, 36 or 37 years.
(c) If we interpret this Hadith to include Muawiya rule into the Caliphate, then his entire 19 years rule has to be treated that way. We cannot say that for 7 years he was Caliph and the remaining 12 years he was not a Caliph.
(d) We have an authentic Prophet’s ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم ) Hadith which says that Khalifat-e-Rashida will remain for30 years. Salafi Scholar Al-Bani graded it as Saheeh).(e) If we say Khilafat-e-Rashida was for 37 years, then we will have deny the above authentic Hadith.
(f) How do we reconcile both these Ahadith to understand the facts in this context? To find the answer to this question, we need to look at the Islamic History. The Hadith mentioned in Ghuniyatut Talibeen says that the power of Islam will last for 37 years. We all know that Muslim kings ruled in the world for centuries. Then, what is this 37 years which is mentioned in the Hadith? Apparently, this Hadith mentions about the purest Islamic Government/power which will last for 37 years.Everyone knows that the power of Islam was established towards the end of second Hijri when Muslims won the Battle of Badr in Ramadhan 2 AH (624 AD). This win marked the establishment of real Muslim Power. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) died in the beginning of 10 Hijri (12 Rabi I, 10 AH). Meaning he was alive for about 7 years (after Badr) by which time Muslims continued their conquest of the entire Arabian Peninsula. After Prophet Mohammad’s (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) death, the Khilafat-e-Rashida (the purest Islamic rule) continued for the following 30 years. Thus the power of (pure) Islam continued for 37 years straight; first 7 years under Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), and the following 30 years under Khulafa-e-Rashideen.Muawiya deposed the Islamic Caliphate and became ruler of Islamic nation after abdication of Caliphate by Imam Hassan (رضئ الله تعالی عنه).
Why Muawiyeen, the followers of Muawiya say that they are Ghulam Ibn Ghulam (غلام ابن غلام) of Muawiya ?
Obviously it is their love of Ahle Bait-e-Muawiya and his progeny. When we look at History, the only male descendant of Muawiya was his son Yazid Ibn Muawiya. Muawiya nominated him for Khilafa after him, and made sure, in the last days of his life, that everyone accepts Yazid as their ruler. Probably Muawiyeen are referring to Muawiya’s progeny (Yazid and his descendants) and claiming that they are the Ghulam (serf) of this progeny.
It is in Hadith – Abdur Rahman Ibn Mughfal said ; “I prayed with Hadhrat Ali ( رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ ) dawn prayer, then Hadhrat Ali ( رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ ) performed Qunoot and said : O’Allah, punish Muawiya and his followers … (Part of the Hadith) (Ibn Abi Shaiba, Vol 2, P 108, # 7050; Kanzul Ummal, Vol 8, P 134, # 219809)Why Muawiyeen conduct Seminars and Conferences in ‘Defense of Muawiya and claim that they are defenders of Muawiya ?It is in Hadith Bukhari – Muawiya claimed in front of a large gathering of Muslims that he is a better Khalifa than Hadhrat Umar ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ).
Thus, Muawiyeen are defending the claim of Muawiya to be better Khalifa-e-Rashid than Hadhrat Umer (رضئ الله تعالی عنه).
It is in Hadith – Narrated `Ikrima bin Khalid ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) : Ibn `Umar ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) said, “I went to (Ummul Momineen) Hafsa ( رضئ الله تعالی عنها ) while water was dribbling from her twined braids. I said, ‘The condition of the people is as you see, and no authority has been given to me.’ Hafsa ( رضئ الله تعالی عنها ) said, (to me), ‘Go to them, and as they (the people) are waiting for you, and I am afraid your absence from them will cause division among them.’ “So Hafsa ( رضئ الله تعالی عنها ) did not leave Ibn `Umar ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) till we went to them. When the people differed,Muawiya addressed the people saying, “‘If anybody wants to say anything in this matter of the Caliphate, he should show up and not conceal himself, for we are more rightful to be the Caliph than he (Ibn Umar – رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) and his father ( Umar – رضئ الله تعالی عنه ).” On that, Habib bin Masalama ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) said (to Ibn Umar – رضئ الله تعالی عنه), “Why don’t you reply to him (Muawiya )?” `Abdullah bin `Umar ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) said, “I untied my garment that was going round my back and legs while I was sitting and was about to say, He who fought against you (Muawiya ) and against your father (Abu Sufyan ) for the sake of Islam, is more rightful to be a Caliph”, but I was afraid that my statement might cause differences among the people and cause bloodshed, and my statement might be interpreted not as I intended. (So I kept quiet) remembering what Allah has prepared in the Gardens of Paradise (for those who prefer Hereafter over this worldly life).” Habib ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) said, “You did what kept you safe and secure”. (Bukhari 4108, Book 64, Chapter 29 Battle of Khandaq)
It is reported that Imam Nasai (214-303 AH) (829-915 AD) traveled to Damascus in 303 AH when he was 89 years old (as per lunar calendar). During this visit he read in Umayyad Mosque Ahadith from his book Khasais-e-Hadhrat Ali (رضئ الله تعالی عنه), which is the collection of Ahadith in praise of Hadhrat Ali (رضئ الله تعالی عنه).
On hearing Ahadith in praise of Hadhrat Ali (رضئ الله تعالی عنه), demanded him to read Ahadith in praise of Muawiya . On this the Imam informed them that there is not a single authentic Hadith in praise of Muawiya .
On hearing this from the Imam, got angry and brutally assaulted him in the mosque. The Imam was martyred in this brutal attack. As per his dying wish, his body was brought by his students to Makka al-Mukarrama where he was buried.Needless to say that Muawiyeen are the followers of the small Group of people who heard and believed Muawiya at the time of his declaration that he is a better Khalifa than Hadhrat Umar ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ). Muawiyeen sect which started in the middle of the 1st century AH, still exists in the world and their followers seem to be increasing day after day.Muawiyeen also praise the progeny and associates of Muawiya who had been instrumental and active in unreasonably shedding the blood of Sahabah, and Ahle Bait-e-At Haar. They call Marwaan bin al-Hakam as Sayyedna Amir al-Momineen on par with Khulafa-e-Rashideen.BARELWI MUAWIYEENIt is reported that Aala Hadhrat wrotein Fatawa Radhwiya, Vol. 29, page 277 and at other places in his works that the status of Muawiya among Sahabah is thousands and thousands stages below than Khulafa e Rashideen. However, Barelwi Ulema and their followers are deeply divided on this issue. Some have become Muawiyeen while others have remained with Ahle Sunnah wal Jama’a.Barelwi MuawiyeenBarelwi Muawiyeen emphasize that over-glorification of Muawiya was the practice of Aala Hadhrat as he has written 4 books and booklets in praise of Muawiya as follows:
(i) Al Bushra al ‘Aajilah min Tuhaf ‘Aajilah (Refutation of Shia beliefs about Muawiya )
(ii) Arsh al Izaaz wa Ikraam li Awwal Muluk al Islam (In Praise of first Kingship in Islam )
(iii) Dhabb al-Ahwaa al-Wahiyyah fi Baab al-Ameer al-Muawiyyah (Answer to the revilers of Muawiya )
(iv) Al-Ahadith al-Rawiyyah li Madh al-Amir al-Muawiyyah (A hadith in Praise of Muawiya)Barelwi Muawiyeen are very vocal in claiming that it was the mission of Aala Hadhrat to spread the greatness and love of Muawiya among Muslims.
They consider Muawiya as Khalifa-e-Rashed and Ameer ul Momineen. Some say it openly and some avoid saying it openly but they all seem to believe he was Khalifa-e-Rashed.
Picture shows the cover page of the book in Urdu written by Barelwi Muawiyeen scholar Hashmi Miya Ashrafi, endorsed by his elder brother Madani Miya Ashrafi claiming Mauwiya to be Khalifa-e-Rashed.Watch the following video clip. A famous Barelwi scholar of Pakistan says that he is proud to have recited the encomium (منقبت) in praise of Muawiya in a large gathering of Barelwis. He declared (and repeated it 3 times) that Muawiya is the crown of his head. He also did Tauba (توبه) for his earlier speech in which he committed disrespect of Muawiya .Barelwi Muawiyeen proudly claim that they are true flag bearers of Maslak-e-Aala Hadhrat. Therefore, they will keep his mission alive in the world. What is their mission? Their mission is to sing the praises of Muawiya . They claim they are the defenders of Muawiya and are adamant to get themselves identified as a separate group ‘Barelwi Muawiyeen’ within Barelwi order.Watch the following video clip. Baraelwi Muawiyeen scholar is accusing and calling another Barelwi scholar as Davil for praising Hadhrat Ali (رضئ الله تعالى عنه) and not praising Muawiya .
BARELWI AHLE SUNNAHBarelwi Ahle Sunnah say that their Grand Shaikh Aala Hadhrat always kept the distinction of Sahabah in mind and refrained from public over-glorification of Muawiya or equating him with Khulafa-e-Rashideen. He believed that in the battle of Siffeen, Hadhrat Ali ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) was on Haqq and Muawiya was on mistake. Aala Hadhrat never said that both Hadhrat Ali ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) and Muawiya were on Haqq in the battle of Siffeen as Barelwi Muawiyeen are drum beating and screaming from their throats these days.Aala Hadhrat never conducted large public gatherings, Seminars, conferences etc., like Barelwi Muawiyeen are doing to over glorify Muawiya .Barelwi Muawiyeen are using Aala Hadhrat name to justify their wrongful believes. Watch the following video clip.Barelwi Ahle Sunnah reject the claim of Barelwi Muawiyeen that Muawiya was Khalifa-e-Rashid. They say that the period of Khulafa-e-Rashideen was 30 years and to include Muawiya as Khalifa-e-Rashid on par with other Khulafa-e-Rashideen is against the commandments of Prophet Mohammad ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم ) and against the Aqeedah of Ahle Sunnah.Barelwi Ahle Sunnah emphasize that there are differences of opinion among Ahle Sunnah Ulema about Muawiya . An absolute majority of Ahle Sunnah Ulema say Hadhrat Ali ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) was on Haq in his fight against Muawiya . And those who fought against Hadhrat Ali ( رضئ الله تعالی عنه ) in Siffeen were rebels. There is a specific Prophet’s ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم ) Hadith in Bukhari and Muslim in this context. Some Ahle Sunnah Ulema say that Muawiya’s mistakes were Ijtehadi. It is mandatory for Muslims to respect opinions of all our Ulema. Watch the following video clips.
Ulema-e-Muawiyeen misinterpret Quranic verses and Ahadith to emphasize the importance of Muawiya as Khalifa-e-Rashid.
They proudly claim they are the defenders of Muawiya in placing him equal in status with Khulafa-e-Rashideen.
Generalized glorification of all Sahabah is a good deed, however it is important that we need to keep the whole picture in mind. We cannot claim Mauwiya to be a Khalifa-e-Rashid. No one from Ahle Sunnah has done so in the history of Islam, except the followers of Muawiyeen sect.
Muawiya’s Grave in Damascus, Syria.
It is sheer common sense that excessive over praise of Muawiya creates suspicion in the minds of the audience about the role of Hadhrat Ali, Hadhrat Hassan and Hadhrat Hussain (رضئ الله تعالی عنهم اجمعین ).
Exclusive gatherings in praise of Mauwiya give wrong signals to people. After listening to over-board-commendation of Muawiya , by Muawiyeen speakers people start looking down on the role of Hadhrat Ali ( رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ ); meaning they start treating Hadhrat Ali – رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ as less respectful than Mauwiya ).
Books, lectures, videos and gatherings portraying Muawiya () to be the restorer of Islamic faith indeed reduces the respect of Khulafa-e-Rashideen and pious members of Ahle Bait.
It looks Ulema-e-Muawiyeen are sowing the seed of disrespect of Ahle Bait and Khulafa-e-Rashideen in the hearts of innocent Muslims. This kind of gatherings and this kind of message causes widespread hate towards Ahle Bait. The greatness, love and respect of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and his Ahle Bait is part of our Iman.
