Hazrat Khwaja Sayyid Kamal Uddin (r.a) was one of the two major successor of the great Sufi master Hazrat Khwaja Naseer Uddin Chiragh(r.a). During the twilight of Dehli years, he was responsible for firmly rooting the sisilah in the Gujrat, a place of relative calm.
The paternal nephew of Khwaja Nasir Uddin, he was also the great grandson of Hazrat Baba Farid Uddin Ganjshakar, and a direct Hussanini descendant of the Holy Prophet (swm).
In his youth, he became the murid ofHazrat Nizam Uddin Auliya, and was thus his uncle’s peer-bhai. The hagiographical works Majalis-e-Hasiniyya, Maqam Ganj-e-Shakar and Siyar al Auliya all recorded that Khwaja Kamal Uddin was honored with the khilafat of Khwaja Nizam Uddin( r.a) before he passed away, as a sign of the latters favor towardshim. The responsibility for his spiritual training, however, was transferred to his uncle Khwaja NasirUddin Chiragh, who completed his suluk and after whose name he appears in the Chishtiya Nizamiyya’s Shajarah.
Little is known about his birth and early life, but he trained to a high level of specialization in all fields of Islamic sciences. Such was his mastery, that he was acknowledged as the top expert of his time in fiqh, tafsir and ulum al hadith. He eventually became well-known as”Kamal Uddin Allama” ( the great scholar) and some of the freat ulamaof India traveled to Dehli to study at his feet.
Hazrat Makhdom Jalal Uddin Bukhariand Moulana Shams Uddin both saints of the thirteen century Chishti order-read the difficult and advancedtext of Sharh al-Mashariq under his guidance. Because of his high degree of learning, and the khilafat he possessed from Hazrat Nizam Uddin Auliyah, he was greatly respected byhis own spiritual master Nasir Uddin Chiragh. Hazrat Makhddom Jahaniyah is also recorded as having said, ” the certificate of authorization(Khilafat Nama) awarded to me by Khwaja Nasir Uddin Chiragh was written by the hand of Hazrat Khwaja Kamal Uddin Allama; and he also counter-signed it to verify and witness it.”
This simple fact bears ample testimony to the great status of Khwaja Kamal Uddin Allama, and the respect in which he was held. The awarding of so prestigious a khilafat nama as that of Khwaja Nasir Uddin, the greatest Sufi masterof his era—was truly momentous event. To countersign such a document implies a degree of equality, and that Allamah Kamal Uddin was made to scribe and word it denotes an implicit trust upon the part of the murshid for his murid.
In his own writings, Khwaja Banda Nawaz Gesu Daraz has also mentioned many of the superlative qualities of Hazrat Kamal Uddin (r.a). These testimonies, along with his own lofty reputation, led the Tughlaq sultan Firuz Shah, as well as his government and ministers, to seek a close bond as possible with him. Khwaja Kamal Uddin, whilst providing advice and admonition to the ruling elite, kept to the principles of the Chishti masters of maintaininga healthy distance from the rich and the powerful, for fear of corruption.
Khwaja Kamal Uddin made seven pilgrimages to Makkah in his lifetime, an enormous amount when one considers the great distances and hardships involved. He met some of the great scholars and saint of his time on these travels, and alsovisited Maasjid al Aqsa in the land of Palestine.
For his first hajj, Khwaja Nizam Uddin Auliya himself came to see him off. He blessed him with his ownkhirqa, which he requested that Kamal Uddin war when making his Hajj. With this, Khwaja Nizam Uddin conferred khilafat upon his young murid. The emotional parting marked the last time that kamal Uddin Allama would see his first murshid in this life.
From there he traveled through Khurasan and other kingdoms on his way to Hijaz. His reputation , and that of his masters in Dehli, had already reached such a degree that kings and sultans along the way came to pay their respect to him. They used to meet him at the roadside knowing full well that the Chishtiyyah order did not accept invitations to palaces in order to touch his feet out of respect.

They also gave him many valuable gifts, such that when he returned to Dehli, he had camels laden with gold and silver tributes. Seeing this, Khwaja Nasir Uddin asked him, ” Ya Kamal, from where have you acquired the trappings of this world?”
He replied, ” I heard on my way thatour master Khwaja Mahbub Ilahi hasattained the unity, and that you are the nominated Khalifah. How could I be so disrespectful as to meet my ( new) master empty handed? I have brought these trinkets with me, so that this wealth may be spent on thetraining of seekers of knowledge andteachers. Now Allah has provided forme, I can spend my life in worship and service, without having to concern myself with where my sustenance will come from.”
It is uncertain as to which of the Khwaja Kamal Uddin’s two masters sent him to the Gujrat, but it was most likely Hazrat Nasir Uddin Chiragh. He spent some time here building up the sisilah into an organized structure, around the teachings of the Chishtiyya, centeredin Mubarak Patan.
The seeds of the Chishtiyyah in Gujrat had been sown by Khwaja Hamid Uddin and Khwaja Mahmud, two lesser known Khalifahs of Khwaja Qutab Uddin Bakthiyar Kaki. However, it was with the arrival of Khwaja Kamal Uddin Allam (r.a) thatthe organization of the sisilah was strengthened and expanded. He set up a centralized structure, much like the one that had existed in Delhi; andwith this he began disseminating the teachings of the Chishtiyya among the people. Freed from political interference, he was able to accomplish the primary duty of the Sufis is the spiritual upliftment of mankind. He continued this wirk untilhis death, on the 27th of Dhul Qaadag 756 AH, one year before thepassing of his own murshid. He afforded his khilafat-e-azam to his son, Khwaja Siraj Uddin (r.a) and liesburied in a simple grave at the feet of Khwaja NaseerUddin Chiragh in Dehli.

Pehli martaba jab Aap Hajj ke safar par jaa rahe the tab Khwaja Naasir-ud-deen Mahmood Chishti ne Aap ko apna Khirqa ata farmaaya aur use Hajj ke safar ke dauraan pehanne ke liye farmaaya.
Aap ne Masjid e Aqsa ki ziyarat bhi ki.
Is safar me Aap ne bahot saare ulama aur asfiya se mulaaqaat karke un se faiz hail kiya.

Raaste me Khurasan aur dusre mulko ke baadsaaho ne Aap ka istaqbaal kiya. Magar Aap kisi ke mahel me na gaye.
Aap jab Delhi tashreef laaye to Aap ke saath sone chaandi se lade hue oont the. Yeh dekhkar Khwaja Naasir-ud-deen Mahmood Chishti ne puchha ‘Kamaal-ud-deen! Tum ne ye sab maal kaise paaya?’ Aap ne farmaaya ‘Mujhe raaste me khabar mili ke Hazrat Nizaam-ud-deen Auliya ka wisaal ho gaya hai aur aap un ke khalifa hain. Main aap ki baargaah me khaali haath aane ki gustaakhi kaise kar sakta hu. Is liye ye sab saamaan lekar aaya hu taake aap use talba aur ulama ko dekar un ki madad karen. Aur main apni zindagi ibaadat me guzaarna chaahta hu.’

Phir Khwaja Naasir-ud-deen Mahmood Chishti ne Aap ko Gujarat jaane ke liye farmaaya. Hazrat ke farmaan par Aap Gujarat aaye aur logo ko ta’aleem aur faiz ata karte rahe.
Aap se pehle Hazrat Khwaja Qutb-ud-deen Bakhtiar Kaaki rahmatullāhi alaihi ke khalifa Khwaja Hameed-ud-deen aur Khwaja Mahmood Chishti Gujarat tashreef la chuke the. Magar Aap ke tashreef laane se Gujarat me Chishti silsila zyada mazboot hua.

Kuchh arse baad Aap apne saahabzaade Hazrat Khwaja Sayyed Siraaj-ud-deen Chishti rahmatullāhi alaihi ko zimmedaari dekar khud Delhi waapas aaye.

Aur Sab ko dunya wa aakhirat me kaamyaabi ata farmae aur Sab ki nek jaa’iz muraado ko puri farmae.
