■ Healers of Hearts:
From Cleansing to Divine Beauty
The Awliyā’ of Almighty Allāh ﷻ are the Healers of Hearts. They look not merely at the outward appearance of a person, but perceive the hidden illnesses that lie within the breast.
Just as a physician of the body diagnoses illness and sometimes prescribes bitter medicine in order to bring about healing,
so too the spiritual master recognises the diseases of the soul and prescribes the medicine of opposites.
When they see a seeker consumed by despair, they pour into him the sweetness of hope. When they see one intoxicated by heedlessness and false security, they awaken him with the fire of awe and reverent fear.
When they find arrogance, they prescribe humility. When they find greed, they teach contentment. When they find impatience, they cultivate surrender and patience. For the true healing of the Heart is found in balance.
▪︎ Sayyidunā ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, may Almighty Allāh enoble his blessed face, said:
“Fear Allāh a fear that makes you cautious,
and hope in Allāh a hope that does not make you feel secure.”
The believer walks to Almighty Allāh ﷻ upon two wings: fear and hope. Fear protects him from heedlessness and sin, while hope protects him from despair.
Imām Abū ʿUthmān al-Ḥīrī, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, taught:
“Hope and fear are like two wings of the believer. When they are balanced, he soars.
If one is broken, he is like a bird that cannot fly.”
▪︎ Imām al-Junayd al-Baghdādī, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, reminded the seekers:
“Our path is built on the Qur’ān and the Sunnah. Whoever does not learn patience and gratitude, he is not of us.”
Thus, the healing of the Heart is never separated from the Sacred Law. The path of the Awliyā’ is not built upon imagination or spiritual claims, but upon the Qur’ān, the Sunnah, patience, gratitude, sincerity and obedience to Almighty Allāh ﷻ.
■ The Two Great Medicines: Takhliyah and Taḥliyah
The Sufis describe the purification and healing of the Heart through two great stages:
▪︎ Takhliyah (تخليّة)
Emptying and cleansing the Heart of its diseases.
▪︎ Taḥliyah (تحلية)
Adorning and beautifying the Heart with virtues.The Heart cannot be filled with Divine light while it remains occupied with the darkness of arrogance, envy, hatred, greed
and heedlessness.
Just as a vessel must first be emptied of impurities before it can be filled with pure water, the Heart must be cleansed before it
can truly become adorned with the beauty of faith.
Takhliyah removes the rust.
Taḥliyah restores the beauty.
Takhliyah empties the Heart of what
separates it from Almighty Allāh ﷻ.
Taḥliyah fills it with what brings it near to Him.
Together, they lead the seeker towards the Qalb-e-Salīm, the Sound Heart.
■ The Qur’ānic Foundation
▪︎ Almighty Allāh ﷻ says:
“Indeed, successful is he who purifies himself, and remembers the Name of his Lord and prays.” (Qur’ān 87:14–15)
▪︎ And Almighty Allāh ﷻ says:
“Indeed, successful is the one who purifies it, and failed is the one who corrupts it.”
(Qur’ān 91:9–10)
The purification of the soul removes its corruption, while the remembrance of Almighty Allāh ﷻ fills it with light.
▪︎ The ultimate goal is the Heart described in the Qur’ān:
“Except one who comes to Allāh with a sound Heart.” (Qur’ān 26:89)
The Qalb-e-Salīm is not merely a Heart empty of disease. It is a Heart alive with beauty. It is a Heart cleansed of arrogance and adorned with humility.
Cleansed of hatred and adorned with mercy. Cleansed of greed and adorned with contentment. Cleansed of despair and adorned with hope. Cleansed of heedlessness and adorned with remembrance.
■ The Awliyā’ as Physicians of the Soul
The Awliyā’ recognise that every disease of the Heart requires a particular medicine.
▪︎ Shaykh Abū Sulaymān al-Dārānī, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, said:
“Whenever the fear of Allāh departs from the Heart, it becomes ruined. And whenever hope departs, it becomes destroyed.”
Too much fear without hope can lead the seeker towards despair. Too much hope without fear can lead him towards heedlessness. Therefore, the spiritual physician restores balance.
▪︎ Shaykh Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Nūrī, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, said:
“Fear cuts you off from wrong actions, and hope leads you to the door of obedience.”
Indeed, wishful thinking without reverence for Almighty Allāh ﷻ can become a disease. It hardens the Heart until tears no longer flow, repentance no longer touches the soul, and the servant becomes comfortable in heedlessness.
But despair is equally destructive, for it makes the servant believe that the mercy of Almighty Allāh ﷻ is beyond his reach.
The Awliyā’ therefore revive the dead Heart:
Turning anxiety into assurance. Hardness into softness. Dryness into flowing tears. Laziness into striving. Despair into hope. Heedlessness into remembrance.
And ultimately, they guide the seeker from
the darkness of the ego towards the light of Almighty Allāh ﷻ.
■ Taḥliyah: Adorning the Heart with Beauty
Once the Heart begins to be cleansed, it must be adorned with noble qualities.
▪︎ The Beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The most beloved of deeds to Allāh are those done with consistency, even if small.”
Adorning the Heart is not a sudden transformation. It is a gradual polishing.
A daily struggle. A continual return to Almighty Allāh ﷻ.
▪︎ The Beloved Prophet ﷺ also taught:
“The most complete believer in faith is the one with the best character.” (Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī)
Thus, the beauty of the Heart becomes visible through the beauty of one’s character. Among the greatest virtues that adorn the Heart are:
▪︎ Ikhlāṣ — Sincerity
To act for Almighty Allāh ﷻ alone.
▪︎ Imām al-Junayd, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, said:
“Ikhlāṣ is a secret between Allāh and the servant. Not even the angels know it to write it, nor the devil to corrupt it.”
Sincerity removes the desire to be seen and replaces it with the desire to be accepted by Almighty Allāh ﷻ.
▪︎ Maḥabbah — Love of Almighty Allāh
Love transforms worship from a burden into longing.
▪︎ Our Lady Rābiʿah al-ʿAdawiyyah, may Almighty Allāh sanctify her secret, prayed:
“O Allāh, if I worship You for fear of Hell, burn me in it. If I worship You for desire of Paradise, deny it to me. But if I worship You for Your sake alone, grant me Your eternal Beauty.”
The highest love seeks Almighty Allāh ﷻ not merely for His gifts, but because He alone is worthy of love.
▪︎ Ṣabr — Patience
Patience is the medicine for the restlessness of the soul. A purified heart learns that every trial carries wisdom, every delay contains mercy, and every hardship can become a door to nearness.
▪︎ Almighty Allāh ﷻ praises those who are patient:
“And Allāh loves the patient.” (Qur’ān 3:146)
▪︎ Shukr — Gratitude
Gratitude allows the seeker to recognise the hand of Almighty Allāh ﷻ in every condition.
The grateful Heart sees blessings where others see only routine. It sees lessons where others see only hardship. It sees mercy even when the wisdom of an event remains hidden.
▪︎ Tawakkul — Reliance upon Almighty Allāh
▪︎ Shaykh Ibn ʿAṭāʾAllāh al-Sakandarī, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, said:
“Relieve yourself of managing affairs,
for what Another has undertaken for you,
do not undertake for yourself.”
Tawakkul does not mean abandoning effort.
It means making the effort while knowing that the outcome belongs to Almighty Allāh ﷻ.
▪︎ Raḥmah — Compassion
▪︎ The Beloved Prophet ﷺ said:
“The Most Merciful shows mercy to those who are merciful. Show mercy to those on earth, and the One above the heavens will show mercy to you.” (Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī)
A Heart that has tasted mercy from Almighty Allāh ﷻ becomes merciful towards His creation.
■ Pain as a Medicine of the Heart
Sometimes the medicine prescribed by Almighty Allāh ﷻ comes in a form the soul does not initially recognise. It may come through loss. Through disappointment.
Through loneliness. Through a wound that refuses to heal.
▪︎ Mawlānā Shams al-Tabrīzī, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret expressed this spiritual reality beautifully:
“Don’t get lost in your pain. Know that one
day your pain will become your cure.”
For the seeker, pain can become a teacher.
It can break the pride of the ego. It can soften the hardened Heart. It can make the servant realise his poverty before Almighty Allāh ﷻ.
It can turn a person from dependence upon creation towards complete dependence upon the Creator.
▪︎ Mawlānā Jalāluddīn Rūmī, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, said:
“The wound is the place where the
Light enters you.”
▪︎ Mawlānā Shams al-Tabrīzī, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, reminds the seeker:
“If the house of the Heart is dark,
love will bring a lamp.”
For Divine love is among the greatest medicines of the Heart. It illuminates what
fear alone cannot illuminate. It softens what knowledge alone cannot soften. It brings life
to what the world has made dry.
■ The Heart as a Mirror
The purpose of cleansing and adorning the Heart is to restore its ability to reflect truth.
▪︎ Shaykh Abū Yazīd al-Bisṭāmī, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, said:
“When the Heart becomes pure, it becomes a mirror of the attributes of Allāh.”
The Heart is like a mirror. When covered with the dust of sin, ego and heedlessness, it cannot reflect clearly. Takhliyah cleans the mirror. Taḥliyah polishes it. Dhīkr illuminates it.
Love beautifies it. Until the Heart becomes capable of recognising the signs of Almighty Allāh ﷻ everywhere.
▪︎ Mawlānā Shams al-Tabrīzī, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, said:
“Try to accept the changing seasons of your soul. Even winter has a hidden spring.”
There are seasons when the Heart feels dry.
Seasons of struggle. Seasons of longing.
Seasons of tears. And seasons of illumination.
The Awliyā’ teach us not to become proud during spiritual openings nor despair during spiritual dryness. Every season has its wisdom.
Every wound may carry a medicine. Every darkness can become the beginning of dawn.
■ The Qalb-e-Salīm:
The Healed and Beautified Heart.
The Qalb-e-Salīm is the destination of this journey. It is the Heart that has been treated by the medicine of the Awliyā’. The Heart that has undergone Takhliyah and Taḥliyah.
The Heart that has learned to fear Almighty Allāh ﷻ without despairing of His mercy.
▪︎ The Heart that hopes in Him without becoming heedless.
▪︎ The Heart that loves without demanding.
▪︎ The Heart that suffers without abandoning trust.
▪︎ The Heart that receives blessings without forgetting gratitude.
▪︎ Mawlānā Shams al-Tabrīz, may Almighty Allāh sanctify his secret, beautifully expressed this reality:
“The whole world could be yours, yet without a Heart alive with Allāh, it is nothing. But if your Heart is alive, then even if you own nothing,
you have everything.”
This is the true wealth of the seeker.
Not the wealth of possessions.
Not the praise of people.
Not spiritual claims or outward appearances.
But a Heart alive with the remembrance, love and presence of Almighty Allāh ﷻ.
■ Conclusion: The Medicine of the Awliyā’
The Awliyā’ are truly the Healers of Hearts because they guide the seeker through the sacred process of transformation.
▪︎ They teach him to empty the Heart through Takhliyah.
▪︎ They teach him to beautify it through Taḥliyah.
▪︎ They teach him balance between fear and hope.
Patience during hardship.
Gratitude during ease.
Humility during honour.
Repentance after error.
And love in every state.
Takhliyah empties the Heart.
Taḥliyah adorns the Heart.
Dhīkr illuminates the Heart.
Love brings the Heart to life.
And through the mercy of Almighty Allāh ﷻ, the Heart becomes Qalb-e-Salīm, the Sound Heart.
The seeker who adorns his Heart with sincerity, patience, gratitude, love, compassion and trust in Almighty Allāh ﷻ becomes a mirror reflecting Divine beauty within the limits of servanthood.
Such is the Heart that walks through this world in longing.
Such is the Heart that finds medicine in its wounds.
Such is the Heart that the Awliyā’ strive to heal.
And such is the Heart that, by the mercy of Almighty Allāh ﷻ, will one day return to its Lord in safety and peace.
“The Day when neither wealth nor children will benefit anyone, except one who comes to Allāh with a sound Heart.” (Qur’ān 26:88–89)
And only with Almighty Allāh is true success.
