
■ ‘The Sayyidunā Khiḍr Reality’, (peace and
the eternal grace of Allāh be upon him),
▪︎ Sayyidunā ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Jīlī (may Allāh sanctify his secret) said:
I entered a wondrous city, vast in length
and breadth.
Its people were the most knowledgeable of creation concerning Almighty Allāh; none among them was heedless.
Its earth was white like fine flour, and its sky was green like emerald. Its people were noble and there was no king among them except our master Sayyidunā al-Khiḍr (peace be upon him). I set down my provision with him,
sat humbly before him, and greeted him.
He returned my greeting with the warmth of an intimate and conversed with me like a close companion. Then he expanded my state and said:
“Bring forth what you have to say.” I said:
“My master, I ask you about your exalted affair and your protected station, about which words have become confused and people have gone astray.” He (peace be upon him) said:
“I am the lofty Reality
and the subtle nearness.
I am the secret of the human of existence,
I am the inner essence of the One worshipped.
I am the ladder of realities,
I am the ocean of subtleties.
I am the divine Shaykh,
I am the guardian of the human realm.
I take form in every meaning
and appear in every expression.
I assume every form
and manifest as a sign in every chapter.
My affair is the wondrous inward,
and my state is the strange state.
My dwelling is Mount Qāf,
and my station is al-Aʿrāf.
I stand at the meeting of the two seas,
immersed in the river of “where-ness,”
drinking from the very source.
I am the guide of the fish in the sea of the divine realm.
I am the secret of nourishment and the bearer of the youth.
I am the outward teacher of Moses.
I am the point of the beginning and the end.
I am the singular, all-encompassing pole,
the radiant light,
the shining full moon,
the decisive word.
I am the bewilderment of intellects,
the aim of seekers.
None reaches me nor enters upon me
except the Perfect Human and the realized spirit.
As for others, my station is above their reach they know nothing of me and see no trace of me. Rather, one of them imagines something about certain human forms, takes my name, and marks himself with my sign. The ignorant then look at him and think he is al-Khiḍr.
But where is he from me? What is his cup compared to my wine? At most, it may be said he is a drop from my ocean or a moment from my time, his reality is but a subtle trace from mine, and his path a path from my paths.
In that sense, I am that fleeting star.”
I said: “What is the sign of reaching you
and entering your domain?” He replied:
“Its sign is hidden within the knowledge of divine power, and its recognition is folded within the knowledge of realization of realities.”
