Al Sayyid Muhammed bin ‘Alawi bin Abbas al-Maliki al-Hasani

Al Sayyid Muhammed bin ‘Alawi bin Abbas al-Maliki al-Hasani, born in Makkah, was one of the most distinguished traditional islamic scholars of the modern era. He was the most highly respected and loved scholar of the holy city and the entire Hijaz region (Western Arabia). He is a descendant of the famous al-Maliki al-Hasani family of Makkah Mukarramah, whose lineage traces back to the beloved Prophet ﷺ through his grandson, Imam al-Hasan ibn Ali رضي الله عنه. Shaykh is the noble representative of the Ahlu Bayt, the leading muhaddith of this age, an authority across the four schools of jurisprudence, a spiritual master of rare calibre, an exemplary caller to Allah, and unparalleled in traditional Islamic learning. Visiting him was considered indispensable for the scholars who would visit Makkah. Shaykh mastered the various traditional Islamic sciences of Aqidah, Tafsir, Hadith, Seerah, Fiqh, Usul, Mustalah, Nahw, etc. He is regarded by many as the Mujaddid of the twentieth century, whose influence extended into the early years of the twenty-first. Born in 1944, he devoted his life to the service of sacred knowledge and the guidance of the Ummah until his return to his Lord in 2004 at the age of fifty-nine. He is laid to rest in Jannat al-Mu’alla in Makkah. Despite facing criticism, al-Maliki Rahimahullah remained steadfast in refuting Wahhabism. He became the self-proclaimed leader of Hijazi Sufism, with several thousand supporters. He has written on a variety of religious, legal, social and historical topics. Some of his well known works are: Mafahim Yajibu an Tusahhah (Conceptions That Must Be Corrected), Bid‘ah ‘inda al-‘Ulama’ al-Salaf, On Celebrating the Birthday of the Prophet, Muhammad the Best of Creation, Prophet’s Night Journey and Heavenly Ascent, Al-Anwar al-Bahiyyah fi Isra wa Miʿraj Khayr al-Bariyyah, Al-Zakha’ir al-Muhammadiyyah, Prophet in the Barzakh. Through these works, he sought to defend Islamic orthodox belief, uphold the honour of the Chosen One ﷺ, illuminate his virtues, and address theological and social misunderstandings with scholarly depth and devotion. May Allah shower His continuous blessings upon the Shaykh.
