Her name was Hind binte Abe Umayya, but she is very well known as Umm-e-Salma (RA). She belonged to a very respectable family and was famous for her knowledge of Islam and her wisdom. She was first married to Abdullah (RA) bin Abdul Assad Makzoomi, who was known as “Abu-Salma”. He was the cousin of our Holy Prophet (pbuh). His mother was Barat binte Abdul Mutallib. He was the one who accepted Islam at its very early stage. He was very brave and kind hearted. Only ten persons were ahead of him in accepting Islam. He was also the foster-brother of the Holy Prophet (pbuh).
Umm-e-Salma (RA) had the honour to be the most lucky woman who accepted Islam at its early stage. Her father Abe Umayya bin Abdullah (RA) bin Umro bin Makzoom was very generous and was very famous in spending money on the poor. It is said that those who travelled with him never took their store of the food but Abe Umayya used to feed all his fellow travellers. Her mother was Aatika binte Amer Rabiya bin Malik bin Khazima. She inherited this quality of generosity from her parents. She was very happy and enjoyed the life when she was married to the brave, wealthy and kind hearted Abdullah (RA) bin Abdul Assad. But it could not continue for a long time, their family members where angry and treated them very rudely when they heard about accepting Islam.
The Holy Prophet (pbuh) advised the Muslims to migrate to “Abyssinia” when the teasing became unbearable. Umm-e-Salma (RA) and Abullah (RA) were also to take up this immigration. This was the first batch of Immigrants to “Abyssinia” which consisted of 20 persons of whom 4 were women as below:
- Uthman Bin Affan (RA) husband of (Ruqayya bint Muhammad (pbuh).
- Abu Hazeefa bin Atba (RA) husband of (Sahla (RA))
- Abu Salma Abdullah bin Abdul Assad Makzoomi (RA) husband of (Umm-e-Salma (RA)).
- Amir bin Rabea (RA) husband of (Laila (RA))
- Zubair bin Awam (RA)
- Massab bin Omair (RA)
- Abdur-Rahman bin Owf
- Uthman bin Owf (RA)
- Abu Satrat bin Abi Rham (RA)
- Hatib bin Omero (RA)
- Sohail bin Wahab (RA)
- Abullah bin Masood (RA)
- Ruqayya bint Prophet Mohammed (pbuh)
- Sahla bint-Sohail (RA)
- Umm-e-Salma Hind bint Abi Omaiya (RA)
- Laila bint Abi Hashma (RA)
The second batch of Immigrants followed them which consisted of 83 men and 19 women. Jaffer bin Abu Talib (RA) was in the second batch. Umm-e-Salma (RA) and her husband were happy there in “Abyssinia” and they had a beautiful daughter Zainab and a son named “Umar” also second daughter “Durra” was born there. The king of “Abyssinia” extended all eminities and facilities to the immigrants. But, the Qurayesh of Mecca were very angry and they sent Umra bin Aas and Abdullah bin Rabiya to “Abyssinia” and they requested the king to hand over all the immigrants to them as they have embraced Islam while rejecting their ancestral religion. They may be dangerous to him if they are allowed to leave there. The king of “Abyssinia” said he will not hand them over unless he heard them by themselves.
Jaffer bin Abu Talib (RA) made an excellent speech against those who were trying to bring them back in front of King. He said
“We were adorning the staleness eating, enjoying wine and breaching peace was our favourite hobby, we never took care of our neighbours and relatives. Our stronger man would sarrow the weaken one. In such circumstances “Allah (S.T.)” sent a Prophet (pbuh) from our linage who is very well known as “Trustworthy” and kind to one and all. He taught us to pray one God and represent ourselves as “Trustworthy” and to always speak the truth to look after the rights of the relatives and the neighbours to refrain from talking “Harram” and not to ill-treat and give respect to the women of the community not to have eyes on the property of the orphans. He asked us to establish “Salat” and give “Zakat” to the poor and to observe fasts during the month “Ramadan”. We accepted him teachings and embraced Islam “Alhamdullillah”. We changed our lives and became the followers of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Our society did not tolerate this and became our enemy.
Jaffer bin Abu Talib (RA) also informed the king the view and belief of the Muslims about Essa & Maryam. The king was satisfied and ordered that the immigrants can leave in his country with peace. The mission of the Qurayesh of Mecca was failed. All these details of this incident have been narrted by Umm-e-Salma (RA).
Umm-e-Salma (RA) narrates that they came back to Mecca when they heard that Umer bin Khattab (RA) embraced Islam and the atmosphere there was calm but this was not so when they came to Mecca and they had to accept the prevailing situation. She once made up her mind again to migrate to “Abyssinia” but Holy Prophet (pbuh) asked them to migrate to Madina-al-Munauwara. She prepared herself for migration to Madina-al-Munauwara. Abu Salma brought a camel for this purpose. The family members of her objected for her departure and detained her at Mecca. Also the members of the family of Abu Salma came there and snatch my children and said that they would look after the children at Mecca. Only Abu Salma left for Madina-al-Munauwara and Umm-e-Salma (RA) and her children had to stay at Mecca. Umm-e-Salma (RA) was very much upset and worried at this separation. At last the family members of Umm-e-Salma (RA) took pity on her and the children were also brought by them and given to her. She was allowed to go to Madina-al-Munauwara. She undertook the journey to Madina-al-Munauwara all alone and reached Madina-al-Munauwara. Uthman bin Talah (RA), who was also going to Madina-al-Munauwara and helped her very nicely and accompanied her till she met Abu Salma. Uthman bin Talah (RA) embraces Islam at the time of “Suleh Hudabiah”.
Abu Salma (RA) took part in the battle of “Badr” and had honour to participate in the battle of “Ohad”. He was badly injured in this battle and his arm was hit by a lance. The injury was so severe that it did hear. The Holy Prophet (pbuh) appointed him as the leader to face and fight the attack of Banu Assad. Abu Ubaida bin Jarrah (RA) and Saad bin Abi Wiqas were also there with him. Abu Salma (RA) did not care for the wound he had and fought very bravely defeating the enemy and returned to Madina-al-Munauwara with great amount of booty in the year 4 Hijra. The injury did not allow him to live. He prayed Allah (S.T.) to give a very good substitute for family after his death when the Holy Prophet (pbuh) visited him at his house. He (pbuh) also prayed that Umm-e-Salma (RA) may have a very good husband who should look after her very nicely. Umm-e-Salma (RA) used to proclaim that never in life she had seen a familiy in Islam which suffered what the family of Abu Salma did nor even I have seen a nobleman than Uthman bin Talah (RA).
After the completion of the waiting period, the Holy Prophet (pbuh) proposed to Umm-e-Salma (RA) she had three excuses (a) I am a very jealous woman for she deeply loved her husband Abu Salma. (b) I have children and (c) I am old. The Prophet (pbuh) said that he (pbuh) was older than her. Allah (S.T.) and His Messenger would look after her children, as for her jealousy, He (pbuh) would pray Allah to remove this from her thus she was married to the Holy Prophet (pbuh) in the year 4 Hijra. The prayer made by Abu Salma (RA) to Allah (S.T.) to give her a better husband was thus accepted by Allah (S.T.)
Umm-e-Salma (RA) reports that she rejected the offer of marriage offered by her by both Abu Bakr Siddiq (RA) and Umer Farooq (RA). She was a very great scholar of Islam, sagacious and wise woman. When the Prophet (pbuh) commanded the people to slaughter their sacrificial animals and get their heads shaved at the “Hudabiah”. The people were suffering distress for nothing. He (pbuh) came to his (pbuh) tent and feeling indignant. He (pbuh) told to Umm-e-Salma (RA) that he (pbuh) had commanded the people to slaughter their scarificial animals and get their heads shaved but there is no response from them.
Umm-e-Salma (RA) said “O Prophet of Allah: You can not make these 1500 people do what they don’t want, Just do your own duty which Allah (S.T.) has imposed on you. Go ahead and perform your own rites in an open place so that every one of them can see you.. The Holy Prophet (pbuh) stepped out of the tent and offered the slaughter of the camel. The people immediately came forward and did the same as the Prophet (pbuh) was doing. When the Prophet (pbuh) returned from Tabuk a part of revelation was sent to him (pbuh) when he (pbuh) was with Umm-e-Salma (RA).Umm-e-Salma (RA) had been feeling much concerned over this matter. The above said revelation as:
And stay quietly in your houses and make not a dazzling display like that of the former Times of Ignorance; and establish regular Prayer and give regular Charity; and obey Allah and His Apostle. And Allah only wishes to remove all abomination from you ye Members of the Family and to make you pure and spotless.
(Surah 33 “Al-Ahzab”, Ayahs 33)
Also the verses revealed when the Holy Prophet (pbuh) was with Umm-e-Salma (RA). Those verses states the Pardon granted to Kaab and others who stayed at home and did not participate in the battle of ‘Tabook’ without a valid excuses. Umm-e-Salma (RA) was so happy with this revelation that she asked the permission from the Holy Prophet (pbuh) to inform in the night itself, but the Prophet (pbuh) informed them after the dawn prayer (Fajr Prayer).
Others (there are who) have acknowledged their wrong-doings: they have mixed an act that was good with another that was evil. Perhaps Allah will turn unto them (in mercy): for Allah is Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful.
(Surah 9 “At-Tauba”, Ayah 102)
(He turned in mercy also) to the three who were left Behind: (they felt guilty) to such a degree that the earth seemed constrained to them for all its speciousness and their (very) souls seemed straitened to them and they perceived that there is no fleeing from Allah and no refuge but to Himself. Then He turned to them that they might repent: for Allah is Oft-Returning Most Merciful.
(Surah 9 “At-Tauba”, Ayah 118)
She was very pious and learned. She knew reading and writing. She had the opportunity to accompany the Holy Prophet (pbuh) on his (pbuh) journeys. She was with him (pbuh) at the battle of ‘Mariah,Khaibar,Fateh Mecca,Taif and Hunain’. She was also with the Prophet (pbuh) at the time of “Hudabiah”. When the Prophet (pbuh) fell ill and moved to the house of A’isha Siddiqua (RA), Umm-e-Salma (RA) often went there to see him. One day when he was very indisposed. She started crying, the Prophet (pbuh) forbade her to do so by saying as “This is not the way of Muslims”. She loved the Prophet (pbuh) very much and the Prophet (pbuh) also loved her mobility and gentleness.
Umm-e-Salma (RA) narrated 378 ‘Ahadith’. She led a very simple and pious life. She also very generous and made other people incline towards generosity. Once Abdur Rahman bin Auf (RA) came and said “O Mother! So much wealth has came to me that I fear ruin”. Umm-e-Salma (RA)advised him to spend it in the name of Allah (S.T.).
She had some of the hair of the Holy Prophet (pbuh) with her and she used to show it to the people. Angel Jibrael once came to see the Holy Prophet (pbuh) in the presence of Umm-e-Salma (RA)as reported by Salman Farsi (RA) that “Angel Jibrael came in the shape of Wahea Kalbi, the companion of the Holy Prophet (pbuh). Umm-e-Salma (RA) had authority on the matters to divorce etc. Abdullah bin Abbas (RA) used to consult her.
She expired during the period of yazid bin Mauwiya at the age of 84 years in the year 62 Hijra. Abu Hurairah (RA) led her burried in “Jannatul-Baqi”(Graveyard).
MAY ALLAH (S.T.) BE PLEASED WITH HER.
