Ummul mumineen Hafsa bint Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ)

Hafsa (RA) bint Umer Farooq (RA) was born 3 years before the Prophet-Hood. She got the pure Islamic atmoshphere when she was growing. Umer Farooq (RA) bin Khattab was very enthusiastic and was very much concerned in spreading Islam which was in early stage. Her uncle was Othman (RA) bin Moazam and Zaid (RA) bin Khattab was her paternal uncle. Her brother Abdullah (RA) bin Umer Farooq (RA) was very famous personality and the greatest scholar of his time. There are seven members of her family who took part in the battle of Badr. They are as below:

Caliph Umer Farooq (RA) bin Khattab (Her father).
Zaid (RA) bin Khattab (Her paternal uncle).
Khunais (RA) bin Huzafa Sahmi (Her former husband).
Othman (RA) bin Mazoon (RA) (Her maternal uncle).
Khudama(RA) bin Mazoon (RA) (Her maternal uncle).
Abdullah (RA) bin Mazoon (RA) (Her maternal uncle).
Soieb (RA).

She was first married to Khunais (RA) bin Hazafa Sahmi, who was among the early Muslims. He suffered a lot for embracing Islam and therefore he migrated to “Abyssinia” as per the directions of the Holy Prophet (pbuh), he was not happy in “Abyssinia” and was rather home-sick. He was always missing Mecca. At last he bid farewell to “Abyssinia” and returned back to Mecca Mukarrama. He, then migrated to Madina-al-Munauwara with his wife Hafsa (RA) and stayed there with Rifaah (RA) bin Abdul Munzar. When the Holy Prophet (pbuh) also came to Madina-al- Munauwara on imigration, He was attached to Abu Umais (RA) bin Jabar as his “Islamic Brother-Hood”. They were very happy and they became the real cadets of the training school estabished by the Holy Prophet (pbuh).

Hafsa (RA) and Khunais (RA) were passing the days in Madina-al-Munauwara happily. Hafsa (RA) used to memorize the verses brought by Angel “Jibrael” to Prophet (pbuh). Hafsa (RA) used to learn the exact meanings of these verses as she was very intelligent and able. Khunais (RA) was very strong and he prepared himself for the sacred battle (Jihaad).

In the year 2 Hijra, Abu-Jahal vowed and marched towards Madina-al-Munauwara to have a better fight. He had plenty of weapons and camels loaded with goods, liquar and food. The Holy Prophet (pbuh) met this caravan at Badr. Khunais (RA) fought very bravery and he received seven injuries. The muslims won the battle though they were small in numbers. Abu Jahal, Uteba, Shaiba and Umayya bint Khalar were killed and their bodies were thrown in the vally of “Khaleeb”. After few days of the battle of Badr, Khunais (RA) could not recover from his injuries. Though Hafsa (RA) took much care in rendering “Nursing”. Ultimately, Khunais (RA) died and become “Martyr” of Badr. He was burried beside the grave of Uthman bin Maazon in “Jannatul Baqi”. The Holy Prophet (pbuh) led the funeral prayer. Hafsa (RA) was very much grieved and she used to patiently pass the days by reciting the Holy Quran, offering prayers and observing the fasts. She was only 18 years old when she became widow.

Umer bin Khattab (RA) was very much worried by seeing the terrible condition of Hafsa (RA). He thought of giving Hafsa’s (RA) hand in marriage to Uthman bin Affan (RA) whose wife Ruqayya (RA) had died. Uthman (RA) told him that he at that time had no intention of marriage. He (Umer (RA)) approached to Abu Bakr Siddiq (RA) and requesting him to marry with Hafsa (RA). He also did not response in affirmative and kept quite. Umer (RA) then reported this to the Holy Prophet (pbuh). Having heard this from Umer (RA), The Holy Prophet (pbuh) said “Do not worry, Hafsa (RA) will have a better husband than Uthman (RA) and Uthman (RA) will have a better wife than Hafsa (RA)”.

Umer (RA) was happy and worried also as to how this could happen. After few days the Holy Prophet (pbuh) announced that had given the hand of Umm-e-Kulthum (RA) bint Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to Uthman bin Affan (RA) and in due course. He (pbuh) sought the hand of Hafsa (RA). Thus it became clear tht Uthman (RA) have a better wife than Hafsa (RA) and Hafsa (RA) have a better husband than Uthman (RA). Thus marriage had taken place in 3 Hijra. Latter Umer (RA) came to know that Abu Bakr Siddiq (RA) did not show his willingness in marrying Hafsa (RA) as he had heard the Holy Prophet (pbuh) intend to marry with Hafsa (RA).

Umer (RA) advised his daughter Hafsa (RA) to be happy to have the Holy Prophet (pbuh) as her husband and he also advised her not to compare herself with A’isha (RA) as she was far better than Hafsa (RA). Having entered into such dignified position of “Ummul-Mumineen”.

Hafsa (RA) paid much attention in serving the Holy Prophet (pbuh) and as per her nature. She paid her attention in memorizing the verses and learning its meaning like A’isa (RA). She used to question and enquire from the Holy Prophet (pbuh) about various things pertaining to Islam. Hafsa (RA) one day was sitting with the Holy Prophet (pbuh) as reported by Ume Mubasher (RA). He (pbuh) said that “All of them who took part in ‘Bait-e-Rizwan’ under’ under a tree will enter into Paradise and no one will go to the Hell. Hafsa (RA) then said, “How this can be so” and she quoted this verse of Sura maryam as Not one of you but will pass over it: this is with thy Lord, a Decree which must be accomplished” . The Holy Prophet (pbuh) was angry with her and He (pbuh) recited the verse:

But We shall save those who guarded against evil and We shall leave the wrongdoers therein (humbled) to their knees

(Surah 19 “Maryam”, Ayah 72)

This news was spread in Madina-al-Munauwara very rapidly. Umer (RA) admonished Hafsa (RA) and again advised her to be move careful and coutious in questioning the Prophet (pbuh). She should listen to the Prophet (pbuh) obediently. Hafsa (RA) then told him that A’isha (RA) also questioning him. She soon made an alliance with A’isha (RA). She had deep undertstanding of religion and great enthusiasum for it that the Holy Prophet (pbuh) was always keen for her education. She used to fast during the day and pray at night. A’isha Siddiqua (RA) narrates that “Among the wives of the Holy Prophet (pbuh) only Hafsa (RA) used to come forward and compete with me”

A’isha Siddiqua (RA) narrrated that the Prophet (pbuh) used to spend time with Zainab Bint Jahash and she used to give him honey for eating. So Hafsa (RA), Saudah (RA) and A’isha (RA) agreed that when the Prophet (pbuh) visited them afterwards, they should say I smell an odour of maghfir (a kind of honey with unpleasant smell), Have you taken some?.” All of them said the same thing when the Holy Prophet (pbuh) visited them. The Prophet (pbuh) said, Do not worry I drank honey at the house of Zainab bint Jahash but I swear that I shall not do it again, Do not tell this to anyone. The act was not of any importance but because it happened with the Prophet (pbuh). Allah (S.T.) took notice of it and rectified the Prophet’s (pbuh) mistake by these words as:

O Prophet (pbuh), Why do you yourself forbid what Allah (S.T.) has made lawful for you, desiring to please your wives but Allah (S.T.) is forgiving and merciful.

(Surah 66 “At-Tahrim”, Ayah 1)

Then in the same period, another incident happened in which the Holy Prophet (pbuh) hadl told some secret to one of his wives and had told her not to reveal it to others. But, inspite of this she revealed it to some one else. The Holy Quran refers to this in these words as:

When the Prophet (pbuh) confided a fact to one of his wives then she divulged it to another and Allah (S.T.) made it known to him (pbuh).

(Surah 66 “At-Tahrim”, Ayah 3)

The Shcolars says that it was Hafsa (RA) who revealed the secret to A’isha Siddiqua (RA).This act was in a way, disobedience to the Prophet (pbuh). We should act as commanded by the Prophet (pbuh), and always abstain from what he dislikes. The Holy Quran admonishes this in these words as:

If ye two turn in repentance to Him your hearts are indeed so inclined; but if ye back up each other against him truly Allah is his Protector and Gabriel and (every) righteous one among those who believe and furthermore the angels will back (him) up.

(Surah 66 “At-Tahrim”, Ayah 4)

Hafsa (RA) was reported to have been divorced by the Holy Prophet (pbuh) but he withdrew it when Gabriel appeared and asked the Prophet (pbuh) O’ Allah’s Messenger! Did you divorce Hafsa (RA), who is very pious and her devotion to prayers i great and she always observes fasts, she is one the wives of him (pbuh) in Paradise.

Hafsa (RA) was the rightful custodian of the Original prototype copy of the Holy Quran, compiled by Zaid bin Thabit under orders of the first Caliph Abu Bakr Siddiq (RA).

Hafsa (RA) died in 45 Hijra at the age of 61 years. She was observing fast when she died. She asked to Abdullah (RA) to give all her property in charity. She had narrated about 60 ‘Ahadith’. She lived with the Prophet (pbuh) for 8 years. Marwan bin Hakam the governor of Madina-al-Munauwara performed her funeral prayer. Her two brothers Abdullah bin Umer Farooq (RA) and Aasin bin Umer Farooq (RA) laid her down in the “Janatul-Baqi”(Graveyard).

We pray Allah (S.T.) to shower mercy upon us all and give us the strength and guidance to understand the Islamic teachings which our Mothers have taught us.

Ummul mo’mineen Hazarte Hafsa bint Umar radiy-Allāhu ta’ala anha :

Aap ki wilaadat 606 A.D. me Makka me hui.

Aap ke waalid ka naam Hazrat Umar Faarooq ibn Khattab radiy-Allāhu ta’ala anhu aur waalida ka naam Hazrat Zainab bint Maz’oon al-Jamuhi radiy-Allāhu ta’ala anha hai.

Aap Quraish ke Banu Adi qabeele se hain.

Aap ka pehla nikaah Hazrat Khunais ibn Huzaifa al-Sahmi se hua. Jinho ne pehle 7 Nabawi (616 A.D.) me Habasha (Abyssinia) aur phir 622 A.D. me Madeena hijrat ki thi aur Jung e Badr me bhi shareek hue the.
3 Hijri (August 624 A.D.) me Hazrat Khunais ibn Huzaifa ka inteqaal hone se Aap sirf 18 saal ki umr me bewa hui.

Hazrat Umar Faarooq ne Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq radiy-Allāhu ta’ala anhu ko Hafsa se nikaah ke liye guzaarish ki magar unho ne inkaar kiya. Phir Hazrat Umar Faarooq ne ko Hazrate Uṡmaan Ghani radiy-Allāhu ta’ala anhu ko Hafsa se nikaah ke liye guzaarish ki magar unho ne bhi inkaar kiya.

Hazrat Umar Faarooq radiy-Allāhu ta’ala anhu ne jab Huzoor Rasool- Allāh sallallāhu alahi wa sallam se ye baat batai to farmaaya ‘Hafsa ko Uṡmaan se behtar shohar milega aur Uṡmaan ko Hafsa se behtar biwi milegi.’

Phir Sha’abaan 3 Hijri (624 A.D.) me Huzoor Rasool-Allāh sallallāhu alahi wa sallam ne Hazrate Hafsa se nikaah kiya tab Huzoor sallallāhu alahi wa sallam ki umr 56 saal thi.
Is tarah Aap Huzoor Rasool-Allāh sallallāhu alahi wa sallam ki chauthi zauja bani.

Hazrat Aa’isha bint Abu Bakr Siddeeq radiy-Allāhu ta’ala anha se Aap ki bahot achhi dosti thi.

Ek baar kisi mas’ale par Aap ne Huzoor sallallāhu alahi wa sallam se puchh liya ke ‘Ya Rasool-Allāh sallallāhu alahi wa sallam! Ye baat kaise mumkin hai?’ Huzoor sallallāhu alahi wa sallam is par naraaz ho gaye. Tab Hazrate Jibr’eel alaihis salaam me aakar ye paighaam sunaaya ke ‘Hafsa ko waapas le lo ke wo kaṡrat se roza rakhti hai aur raat bhar ibaadat karti hai aur wo jannat me bhi tumhare saath hogi.’
Is ke baad kabhi Aap ne Huzoor sallallāhu alahi wa sallam ko kisi bhi baat par naraaz nahi kiya.

Aap Haafiz e Qur’an thi.

Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq radiy-Allāhu ta’ala anhu ke zamaane me Hazrat Zaid ibn Ṡaabit radiy-Allāhu ta’ala anhu ne ashaaba ke saath Qur’an majeed ko jama karke kitaab banaane ka kaam shuru kiya. Hazrat Umar Faarooq radiy-Allāhu ta’ala anhu ke zamaane me jab Qur’an majeed ko jama karne ka kaam mukammal hone aaya tab us ki ek naql Hazrate Hafsa ko hifaazat ke liye di gai. Hazrate Uṡmaan Ghani radiy-Allāhu ta’ala anhu ke zamaane me jab alag alag mulko me Qur’an majeed ki naql bhejna tay kiya gaya tab Hazarte Hafsa ke paas jo naql thi ke zariye Qur’an ki dusri naql tayyaar ki gai.

Aap ka mazaar Jannatul Baqi, Madeena munawwara me hai.

Aur Ummul Mo’mineen Hazrate Hafsa radiy-Allāhu ta’ala anha aur Ahle bait ke waseele se
Sab ko mukammal ishq e Rasool ata farmae aur Sab ke Eimaan ki hifaazat farmae aur Sab ko nek amal karne ki taufiq ata farmae.
Aur Sab ko dunya wa aakhirat me kaamyaabi ata farmae aur Sab ki nek jaa’iz muraado ko puri farmae.
