Who is Iblīs and His 5 Kids?

■ Who is Iblīs and His 5 Kids?

Iblīs himself is a big boss of mischief and trouble, the great enemy of Allah ﷻ, who was created from smokeless fire—like a fiery jinn with a smoky mystery. Allah ﷻ tells us in the Qur’ān,

وخَلَقَ الْجَانَّ مِنْ مَّارِجٍ مِّنْ نَّارٍ.
▪︎ (الرحمن 55: 15)

“And He created jinn from fire free of smoke”
▪︎ (al-Rahmān 55:15).

The very root of the word jinn means “to cover” or “to hide,” because these beings are often unseen, sneaky, like whispering shadows in the night.

Now, listen carefully! Iblīs has not come alone. Oh no! He has 5 children—his little troublemakers, his agents of chaos, each with their own wicked job to make us stumble away from the beautiful path of Allah ﷻ. Let me introduce you to these infamous 5 with a wink and a reminder that our Zikr (remembrance) and du‘ā (prayers) are our shield.

1. Thabr — The Disaster Dealer

Thabr is the big boss when disaster strikes or when troubles hit us hard. He rushes in with his troops and children to make us angry at Allah ﷻ. If you lose your keys, your phone dies, and your tea spills all at once — Thabr is laughing behind the scenes trying to make you say, “Why, Allah?” But we say louder, “A‘ūdhu billāhi minash shaytān Thabr ar-rajīm wa junūdihi wa abnā’ihi!” — I ask Allah’s protection from that accursed devil Thabr and his nasty gang! That’s how we send him packing!

2. Dāsim — The Marriage Mischief Maker

Ah, Dāsim, the ultimate party crasher in happy homes! He sneaks in between husband and wife, planting seeds of hatred so they start fighting and maybe even divorce. What a mean trick! But guess what? We outsmart him by saying, “A‘ūdhu billāhi minash shaytān Dāsim ar-rajīm wa junūdihi wa abnā’ihi!” This means I ask Allah’s protection from Dāsim, the cursed one and his crew. And just like that, our love garden stays blooming!

3. A‘war — The One-Eyed Temptation Trickster

Here’s a funny name—A‘war means “one-eyed.” But don’t be fooled by the name, his mission is serious! He sends his troops and children to make women appear extra tempting when they go out, hoping to stir up temptation and adultery. But hold your hearts, dear readers, because our defense is strong: “A‘ūdhu billāhi minash shaytān A‘war ar-rajīm wa junūdihi wa abnā’ihi!” Meaning I seek Allah’s protection from the devil A‘war and his followers. Like a spiritual sunscreen, this protects our eyes and hearts!

4. Maswath — The Big Liar

This one is the grand master of lies and gossip. Maswath and his gang fly around spreading false stories like wildfire, making people distrust each other. Oh, the chaos they try to create! But our weapon is this powerful phrase: “A‘ūdhu billāhi minash shaytān Maswath ar-rajīm wa junūdihi wa abnā’ihi!” I seek refuge from Maswath, the cursed liar, and his troops. Truth always shines brighter when we remember Allah ﷻ.

5. Zalnabur — The Market Fighter

And last but not least, Zalnabur, the troublemaker in the marketplaces. He stirs up fights, arguments, and chaos where people come to trade and meet. If a peaceful bazaar suddenly buzzing with quarrels—that’s his doing! So when you step into the hustle and bustle, say, “A‘ūdhu billāhi minash shaytān Zalnabur ar-rajīm wa junūdihi wa abnā’ihi!” I ask Allah’s protection from Zalnabur and his crew. Peace returns like the morning breeze.

Why We Say These Words?

Dear readers, the words A‘ūdhu billāh minash shaytān mean I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil. Adding their names and troops is like telling them, “No entry here!” It’s like having a spiritual bouncer guarding your heart and mind.

Remember, just like a good Sufi there’s always light behind the dark. These devils want to trap us, but with the zikr and salawat/durood on our lips and the love of Allah ﷻ in our hearts, we shine bright and keep their mischief far away.

So, keep these words handy—like your spiritual sunglasses against the devil’s glare—and let’s walk the path with love, and strong protection from Allah ﷻ!

Always remember to smile, say your A‘ūdhu, and walk close to Allah ﷻ’s mercy.
