The word ‘al-Mawla’ is commonly used to mean ‘guardian (Mutawalli),’ ‘the one who has authority over affairs’ (al-malik li-l-amr), and ‘the one who has the right to dispose of’ (awla bit-tasarruf). This usage has been documented by many Arabic language scholars.

Narrated by Abdullah bin Muhammad, from Abdulrahman bin Saleh Al-Azdi, from Musa bin Uthman Al-Hadrami, from Abu Ishaq, from Zaid bin Arqam and Al-Bara, who said: “We were with the Messenger of Allah (صلی الله علیه و آله و سلم) on the day of Ghadir Khumm, and we were holding up the branches of the trees over his head. Then he said: ‘𝑽𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒍𝒚, 𝑨𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒉 𝒊𝒔 𝒎𝒚 𝑾𝒂𝒍𝒊 (𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓) 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰 𝒂𝒎 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒂𝒍𝒊 𝒐𝒇 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒃𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓. Holy Qur’an 33:6
It was narrated that Bara’ bin ‘Azib said:
“We returned with the Messenger of Allah from his Hajj that he had performed, and we stopped at some point on the road. He commanded that prayer should be performed in congregation, then he took the hand of ‘Ali and said: ‘Am I not dearer to the believers than their own selves?’ They said: ‘Yes indeed.’ He said: ‘Am I not more right to every believer than his own self?’ They said: ‘Yes indeed.’ He said: ‘This man is the master of those whose master I am.’ O Allah, take as friends those who take him as a friend, and take as enemies those who take him as an enemy.'”
