Khawajah Alauddin Attaarرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ


Name and Lineage:His name is MUHAMMAD son of MUHAMMAD BUKHARI.

Homeland: He belonged to the ‘Khwarezm’. When his father passed away, he did not accept anything from the inheritance. 

Acquisition of Knowledge: He was engaged in getting knowledge in a Madrasah of Bukhara. He got marriage with a daughter of Hazrat Khawajah Naqshband رحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ during student life. When a desire of seeking the right way created in his heart, then he went to Hazrat Khwajah رحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ and by abandoning traditional sciences, he derived a way. 

Allegiance and Caliphate(Khilafat): He got the allegiance and khilafat from Hazrat Khwajah Bahauddin Naqshbandi رحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ . 

Character and Peculiarities: He was the first khalifah and absolute successor of Hazrat Khwajah Naqshband رحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ . The saintly eyes of Hazrat Khwajah رحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ particularly focused on him. He used to say to him to sit down close to him in religious gathering and he would pay attention to him again and again. Some people asked for that reason, he replied that I sit him close to me lest wolf might eat him. The wolf of his psyche is in ambushing position. For that, I keep on asking for his condition every moment. Therefore, he swiftly reached the higher status through the great attention of Hazrat Khwajah Sahib رحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ . Hazrat Khawajah Sahib رحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ used to entrust the training of many students to him in his life and would say, Alauddin reduced my burden. Much saintly blessings and signs appeared by Khawajah Sahib. Many students got the nearness and perfection’s status through his blessed company. Some saints stated that Qudwa-tul-Muhaqqiqeen who were his companions, used to say, unless I went to Sheikh Zainuddin’s company, I did not get rid of from the schism. Similarly, as long as I got the companion of Khawajah Alauddin Attar رحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ , I could not recognize to Almighty Allah.  Hazrat Khawajah Alauddin Sahi رحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ has the specific saintly order that is called ‘Alaaiyah’. Hazrat Mujaddid-e-Alf-e-Thani رحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ mentioned it in his letters with detail. (Daftar-e-Awwal, Maktoob 290) 

Demise: After Isha prayer, he passed away on Monday in 20 Rajab-ul-Murajjab 802 AH. His Shrine is in Chaghaniyan town.

Hazrat Khwājā Alā’uddīn al-Attār al-Bukhārī radiyAllāhu anhu (d.804H) was son-in-law and the chief deputy of the founder of the Naqshbandi Sufi order Hadhrat Khwaja Baha ad-Din Naqshband al-Bukhari radiyAllāhu anhu.

He passed away on Wednesday 20 Rajab 804 AH (23 February 1402). He is buried at Jafaaniyan, Transoxiana (Uzbekistan).

Among his deputies, the famous ones are the following:

  1. His noble son, Khwājā Hasan Attār quddisa sirruh (d.826 AH), who was also one of the leading shaykhs of the Naqsbhandiyyah. He left one son named Khwājā Yūsuf Attār and many other deputies who spread this noble path.
  2. Mawlānā Nizām al-Dīn Khāmūsh. He was a man of miracles. Among his deputies was Shaykh Sa’d al-Dīn Kāshgharī.
  3. Sayyid Sharīf al-Jurjānī (d.824 AH). He is the author of these books:
    1. Wahdat al-Wujūd (The Unicity of Being)
    2. Ta’rīfāt (Definitions)
