The Grandson of Iblis

■ The Grandson of Iblis:

Shaykh-ul-Islam Prof. Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri said:

Qazi Bayzawi in Tafsir Bayzawi, Ibn Hafs Al-Hanbali in Al-Lubab, Imam Jalaluddin Suyuti in Al-Khasa’is Al-Kubra, and Imam Abu Nu’aim in Al-Dala’il have narrated many incidents from the Imams, and here is one of them narrated by Hazrat Anas (رضي الله عنه).

Hazrat Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) narrates that they were outside the city of Madinah, in a certain place, when an elderly man appeared. He was in the form of a human, but he was actually a jinn. The elderly man had a stick in his hand. He approached the court of the Beloved Prophet (ﷺ) and greeted him with Salam. The Prophet (ﷺ) responded and said, “Who are you from among the jinn?” It was not written on his forehead that he was a jinn, as he had taken the form of a human, and the Companions (رضي الله عنهم) thought he was a man.

This incident highlights the grandeur of the Sultan and King (i.e., the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ), who recognizes each member of his kingdom. He asked the man, “From which nation of the jinn are you? From which tribe?” The Prophet (ﷺ) didn’t ask, “Who are you?” This wasn’t knowledge of the unseen, but rather the veils had been lifted. The ruler, the King of kings, recognized every class of his creation in the vast universe.

This is unlike the rulers of today who are oblivious to the condition of their people. They have no idea who is starving, who is without electricity, who is without water, or who is without gas, yet people are receiving bills for thousands of rupees for gas they didn’t even receive. This is an immense injustice.

In contrast, the Prophet (ﷺ) knew everyone, even those in the world of jinn. Hazrat Anas (رضي الله عنه) narrates that the jinn responded to the Prophet (ﷺ), saying, “O Messenger of Allah, I am the son of Hameem, son of Laqeeth, son of Iblis (Satan).” He said, “Yes, my name is Haam, my father’s name is Hameem, my grandfather’s name is Laqeeth, and my great-grandfather’s name is Iblis.” He was the great-grandson of Iblis, and he had come to accept the servitude of the King of the universe (i.e., the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ).

The Prophet (ﷺ) said to him, “There are only two generations between you and Iblis: your father and your grandfather.” The jinn confirmed this and the Prophet (ﷺ) asked him, “How old are you?”

The jinn replied that when Qabil (Cain) killed Habil (Abel), he was just a few years old, but he was old enough to understand what was happening.

He further said, “I have believed in Sayyiduna Ibrahim (عليه السلام), I accompanied Sayyiduna Yusuf (عليه السلام), I was with Sayyiduna Musa (عليه السلام), and I was with Sayyiduna Isa (عليه السلام). When I was with Sayyiduna Isa (عليه السلام), he taught me the Injil (Gospel) and gave me a message, saying, ‘If you meet the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), convey my Salam (greetings) to him.'”

The jinn continued, “O Messenger of Allah, I am here to deliver Sayyiduna Isa’s (عليه السلام) Salam to you.” Upon hearing this, the Prophet’s (ﷺ) eyes filled with tears out of gratitude to Allah, and he responded to the Salam.

The Prophet (ﷺ) then asked the jinn if he had any request. The jinn replied, “O Messenger of Allah, teach me the Qur’an. I have come to become your student.” The Prophet (ﷺ) then taught him ten Surahs (chapters) of the Qur’an, including Surah Al-Waqi’ah.

Thus, the great-grandson of Iblis accepted Islam, and the Prophet (ﷺ) included him among the members of his Ummah.

Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (رضي الله عنه) said, “After this, we did not meet him again, and I do not know if he is still alive today.”

This narration demonstrates that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was the King and Master of all creation, even before his birth, during his lifetime, and will remain so until the Day of Judgment, ruling over both humans and jinn.
