According to Jabir b. Abd Allah : “A baby boy was born to a man among us, and he called
him Muhammad. People said; ‘we will not let you call him on the
name of Allah’s Messenger .’ The man took his son, carrying
him on his shoulder brought to beloved Prophet and said: ‘O
Messenger of Allah ! A baby boy born to me, I named him
Muhammad, and my people say; ‘we will not let you call him on
the name of Allah’s Messenger.’ Allah’s Messenger said: ‘You
may call yourselves by my name but don’t call on my surname
(kuniyah). Indeed am the distributor (al-Qasim), I distribute
among you.’”

Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and al-Muslim. The wording is
from al-Muslim.
In another report of the both (al-Bukhari and al-Muslim);
‘I have been sent as the distributor, I distribute among you.’
